On va y aller tranquillement, hein. Les chaleurs estivales s'estompent un peu en cette fin de saison alors à vrai dire, mieux vaut ne pas surestimer ses capacités à l'approche imminente d'AMPLIFIED HEAT. Car ce trio nous vient du Texas, un Etat où le soleil a la vie belle, tant et si bien que quelques célèbres politiques du coin y ont déjà laissé des neurones. Sévissant depuis 1999 du côté d'Austin sous le nom BLUES CONDITION, la fratrie Ortiz, composée de Jim, Gian et Chris (KRISIUN, sort de ce corps !) s'est désormais fait une petite réputation sous le nom d'AMPLIFIED HEAT. A son actif, un EP, trois albums, ainsi qu'un changement d'orientation musicale bien sympa. Passer d'un Hard Rock bluesy à un Heavy Metal teinté de Stoner n'a rien de bien radical, sauf que ces garçons, quoiqu'ils fassent, n'ont jamais renié leurs racines, au point d'avoir conservé cette méthode de fabrication qui joue la carte de l'artisanal à l'heure où l'inspiration devient de plus en plus uniformisée.
Pour plonger comme il se doit au cœur du projet, point d'analyse jusqu'au-boutiste d'How Do You Like The Sound Of That (2007) ou d'autopsie d'On The Hunt (2010). Arclight Records aura fait le nécessaire, en rééditant en 2007 leur démo éponyme datée de 2003. C'est cette même démo qui fera l'objet de ce papier et Dieu sait que cette sortie aura posé à l'époque les jalons de leur identité artistique. Niveau tracklist, "'Til The Sun Goes Down" passe à la trappe, remplacée par l'inédite "Mornings Warning". Un septième titre sera même ajouté avec leur "She Drank That Wine". AMPLIFIED HEAT, sans même le connaître, est de ces groupes pour lesquels le Rock est une affaire d'instinct. Ce serait un peu facile de relier leur talent avec leurs origines, mais il faut avouer que le paramètre est frappant. "Heart Attack", en grosse caricature de Hard Rock sudiste, impose déjà sa basse qui tabasse et sa vitesse punky. "I Don't Care" la suit de près avec son motif catchy et ses guitares relâchées, se facilitant la tâche grâce à un thème qui parlera à tout le monde : "une chanson pour les cœurs brisés qui ont su se relever". AMPLIFIED HEAT, s'il ne s'attire pas la sympathie des foules en musique, le fera en abordant des sujets légers et décalés, comme sur "Bi-Polar", sous-titrée "il n'y a pas d'excuse pour être un trou du cul". Leurs racines texanes suintent au sommet de ce Rock comme la graisse en surface d'une mayonnaise virée au soleil et ma foi, le dépaysement est généreux. Evidement, les prises de tête sont inexistantes, puisque le trio se contente de faire parler le feeling, conservant au passage quelques notions de Blues (leur style d'origine), incorporant le kitschissime orgue Hammond sur "Mornings Warning" ou se payant des pianos sur "Dead Man Walkin", une sortie longue de neuf minutes, terriblement nonchalante, qui donne très envie de coller son cul au fond d'un rocking-chair et de regarder une course de tumbleweed. Sans parler de la voix brisée de Jim (une distillerie sur pattes) ou de ses solos extravagants, symboles d'un Hard Rock authentique et chaleureux.
Avec le recul, une petite touche de MOTÖRHEAD qui aurait rencontré THE BLACK KEYS et LYNYRD SKYNYRD vient se greffer à cet EP. C'est assurément trop peu consistant pour résumer le premier effort d'AMPLIFIED HEAT, mais ça situe le registre des Américains. Aucune fausse note, que du groove et du bon Hard Rock, il n'y a finalement pas grand-chose de substantiel à retenir de cette sortie. Mais le peu qu'on en retiendra suffira pour accompagner en musique votre rêve américain.
