Je pense que nous sommes tous plus ou moins d'accord pour dire qu'IN-QUEST était à son apogée à la sortie de cet EP. C'est d'ailleurs une des raisons qui justifient l'écriture de cette chronique, à l'heure où les Belges s'apprêtent à modestement fêter le dixième anniversaire de Destination : Pyroclasm. Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste ? En 2013, d'un groupe qui évoque vaguement la notion du Death technique de la décennie précédente. Et encore, je doute que les plus jeunes puissent avoir connaissance de l'impact qu'a eu IN-QUEST lors des sorties d'Operation : Citadel ou d'Epileptic. Mais il faut bien comprendre qu'à l'époque, un Death Metal déstructuré et façonné comme l'était celui de la période Destination : Pyroclasm avait tout de la petite bombe à retardement qui remodèle le visage meurtri du style. D'abord Brutal Death légèrement axée Grind, la musique du combo s'est alors transfigurée en un Death technique et épileptique. Une ouverture certainement pas provoquée par l'arrivée au micro d'un certain... Sven De Caluwé (ABORTED).
A l'époque, IN-QUEST rompait avec quatre années d'atermoiements, successifs à la parution du très bon Operation : Citadel. On peut donc penser que cet EP avait pour but premier d'offrir au public un avant-goût de ce que sera Epilectic avec Sven comme chanteur. Et profitez-en bien, car ces deux disques seront les deux seuls sur lesquels apparaitra le frontman d'ABORTED. Il est d'ailleurs la première chose que l'on remarque vraiment, après une intro sautillante et catchy qui fait un peu penser aux premiers FEAR FACTORY. Son dédoublement et sa profondeur vocale qui donne toujours l'impression d'avoir affaire à deux ou trois chanteurs différents apporte une couleur vraiment violente à cet EP et, par la même occasion, rattaché à la brutalité de certains riffs, évoque sans qu'on le veuille l'œuvre d'ABORTED, le gore en moins. Et c'est précisément là qu'IN-QUEST en profite pour développer toute une panoplie d'ambiances, puisque basant son concept thématique sur la science-fiction, la technologie et l'hyperespace. On a très clairement l'impression d'être à bord d'une station orbitale, un dédale de couloirs, un labyrinthe habité par une présence qui tue. Le riffing extraterrestre de la doublette Douglas Verhoeven / Jan Geenes qu'on peut aussi qualifier de meshuggien sans verser dans la synonymie primitive se révèle tout à fait conforme à l'échappée futuriste que représente cet EP. IN-QUEST était vraisemblablement un visionnaire pour son époque même si une telle sortie aujourd'hui ne rivaliserait que d'efficacité. Et bien sûr, on adore toujours autant le sample du "Terminator 2" de James Cameron qui ouvre l'épique "Sequence 2171 : Dehumanized", appuyant le côté machine de guerre de la troupe. Tout est bon, rien n'est à jeter, pas même la reprise de leur propre "Battle Domination" (en cinquième position Operation : Citadel) qui matérialisera aux oreilles de chacun la version 2.0 d'IN-QUEST.
Dix ans après, Destination : Pyroclasm a le chic de ne pas avoir trop vieilli. Evidement, l'esprit de Sven De Caluwé est désormais bien loin et la sortie récente de Chapter IIX – The Odyssey Of Eternity n'a plus grand-chose à voir avec cet EP. Mais IN-QUEST reste un de ces groupes qui aura su se démarquer, créer, oser mais surtout réussir. L'histoire dit qu'on est désormais passé à autre chose, et c'est bien normal. Mais Destination : Pyroclasm, lui, demeurera un roc.
