Que de chemin parcouru par les Finlandais de Sentenced depuis leurs débuts Death avec « Shadows of the past » ! Désormais étiqueté Metal Gothique, Sentenced avait placé la barre haut avec les deux précédents opus, « Frozen » et « Crimson ». « The cold white light », leur huitième effort, se place dans la continuité des albums précédents et poursuit l’évolution du groupe vers une musique de plus en plus mélodique.
Après la froide et sombre introduction « Konevistan kirkonkellot », nous avons affaire à une déferlante de 10 titres de Metal Gothique tantôt heavy et entraînant (« Neverlasting », « Excuse me while I kill myself »…), tantôt plus lent et mélancolique (« Everything is nothing », « Guilt and regret »…), et tantôt plus optimiste (« Brief is the light », « You are the one ») ; le tout porté par la voix chaude et gorgée d’émotions de Ville Laihiala. Les chansons sont directes et accrocheuses et les refrains sont mémorisables dès la première écoute (« Cross my heart and hope to die », « Blood and tears »). En revanche, je trouve que la qualité des paroles est légèrement inférieure à celle des albums précédents, elles gagnent en provocation et en ironie ce qu’elles perdent en mélancolie et en beauté pures.
Certains fans de la première heure pourraient crier au scandale à l’écoute de ce qui est sans doute l’album le plus accessible et le plus « pop » du groupe, mais ne boudons pas notre plaisir, car « The cold white light » est un excellent album dans lequel il fait bon se plonger et que l’on prend à chaque fois beaucoup de plaisir à écouter.
