Fidèles à leurs aspirations musicales, les membres de RING OF FIRE reviennent avec ce nouvel album aussi complexe et technique que les précédents. Le départ de Vitalij Kuprij a laissé le clavier en léger retrait ce qui confère davantage d’importance à la rythmique. Les compositions y gagnent en puissance et surtout en cohérence. C’est sans doute sur ce point que le groupe réalise son progrès le plus notable. Car si l’on a toujours pu se réjouir de la qualité de l’interprétation, la cohésion faisait parfois défaut. Le problème est réglé sur ce « Laps Of Reality » dont les morceaux sont basés sur l’efficacité plutôt que sur la démonstration outrancière. L’album est donc infiniment plus digeste et les titres s’enchaînent avec fluidité.
Cet album fait enfin apparaître les compositions que nous étions en droit d’attendre de la part de musiciens si talentueux. Ainsi « Perfect World » est un adroit compromis entre Metal progressif et mélodique. Les lignes de chant se retiennent immédiatement, la rythmique est puissante à souhait. On peut faire les mêmes commentaires pour « One Little Mystery ». Le single « Lapse Of Reality » ne manque pas de qualités mais il est un peu trop basique pour ne pas lasser après plusieurs écoutes.
« Machine » s’inspire beaucoup des créations de Steve Vai ; il faut rappeler que 3 des membres du groupe ont travaillés avec le maître.
Les fans de progressif ne seront pas déçus avec des titres tels que « Don’t Know » et surtout « Faithfully » avec sa production énorme, et dont le volume de la rythmique varie en fonction des riffs ce qui donne une impression de mouvement et de profondeur. C’est l’idée la plus originale et la plus créative que le groupe nous ait offerte jusqu’à présent.
