On ne le sait pas encore, mais par-delà la constellation, par-delà son thème spatial et bleuté, X va sortir du lot. J'aurai aimé que ce X, ou peut-être cette croix, ou peut-être autre chose, soit le 10 romain. X comme 10 albums et SONS OF OTIS comme un groupe expérimenté. Non, SONS OF OTIS seulement comme un groupe expérimental. Ce X, c'est l'inconnu de l'équation proposée. Trouvez la croix et vous trouverez le trésor. Trouvez X et vous résoudrez le problème. Il y a quelque chose d'éminemment algébrique dans cet album proposé par les fadas de Smallstone Records. Après BOTTOM et GREATDAYFORUP, on se doutait bien de quelque chose, mais probablement pas de ce qui allait se passer. Là-haut, très haut, là où l'homme n'a jamais voyagé, on a observé de la lumière. Une brève incandescence. Aux frontières de la décence également, puisque SONS OF OTIS de son esprit divaguant tirera un peu trop de libertés.
Cette lumière, ce n'est pas celle d'une supernova, plus brillante l'espace de quelques secondes qu'une complète galaxie. Ridiculement hypnotique mais jamais aveuglante, elle est un dysfonctionnement cosmique. SONS OF OTIS, naviguant librement au-dessus de la stratosphère, a pété un fusible, et le court-jus s'est vu depuis la terre ferme. Comment mettre des mots sur l'indigence ? Si vous n'avez pas mal à la tête, préservez-vous de cet opus. Car il ne s'y passe rien et qu'en même temps, rien c'est assez pour donner la migraine. J'ai honte de vous dire que ces Canadiens pratiquent du Stoner / Doom, car ainsi j'insulte publiquement des formations comme KYUSS, ORANGE GOBLIN ou ELECTRIC WIZARD qui ont fait de la fumette leur fond de commerce. Cet album est une ode ténébreuse et compliquée à l'à-peu-près, un hommage vibrant, trop vibrant au Rock psychédélique des années 1970. C'est bien simple, X se consume entre une crise d'épilepsie et une neuro-dégénérescence permanente. Toutes les compositions tremblent au rythme de ces riffs moroses, de ces réverbérations insupportables qui vont jusqu'à infecter les vocaux de Ken Baluke. Ses râles caoutchouteux rebondissent sans fin dans les écouteurs, tel un écho extraterrestre d'une pénibilité rare. Ok, c'est un concept comme un autre et SONS OF OTIS a l'air très impliqué dans ses propres divagations, mais le résultat proposé à des auditeurs qui n'ont pas forcément besoin d'inhaler de la colle pour se sentir heureux n'est pas digne d'une véritable création artistique. Le trio empile les arrangements, les riffs en carton, les bidouillages spatio-temporels sans esprit, sans paroles (ou alors du chewing-gum), sans lucidité. Que leur art ne soit pas à ma portée ne me donne pas le droit de le déjuger, mais je mentirais comme un arracheur de dents en vous recommandant chaleureusement ce disque d'une anti-intensité peu commune.
SONS OF OTIS a atteint son but et frôle le néant galactique avec ce quatrième full-lenght. Aucune émotion ne le traverse, il ne s'y passe rien. De vagues nuances psyché-Heavy pointeront leur nez en bout de course, mais greffées sur des morceaux de 10 à 14 minutes, on en voit mal l'utilité. S'adressant à un public loin d'être en pleine possession de ses moyens, X, presque X ans après sa sortie, continue son entreprise d'avilissement mental sans trop de réussite, et c'est tant mieux.
