Le passé ressurgit comme un fantôme. On croyait la mort tragique de Paul Vincent Raven, (principalement connu pour avoir été le bassiste de KILLING JOKE et MINISTRY) le 20 octobre 2007 digérée, acceptée, évacuée, sans toutefois la reléguer à un souvenir. Le bonhomme aura laissé trop de musique derrière lui pour qu'on l'oublie. Mais je ne m'attendais pas à ce qu'une chronique de MOB RESEARCH, même plusieurs années après sa sortie, puisse avoir un tel impact sur la mémoire. Il faut dire également qu'avec Holy City Zoo, les américains ont sorti un album... photo, puisque le booklet est un véritable livre d'or dédié à Raven, bourré de dédicaces de grands musiciens (Ted Parsons et Tommy Victor de PRONG, Sin Quirin et Al Jourgensen de MINISTRY, Reza et Big Paul de KILLING JOKE, Casey Chaos d'AMEN et même Marco de TREPONEM PAL, lui qui bossait avec Raven à Genève au moment de sa crise cardiaque) et de clichés en tous genres. L'émotion semble sincère, mais je ne sais toujours pas quoi penser de la volonté de faire une pub un peu morbide à MOB RESEARCH en envoyant cet album posthume aux webzines...
Histoire de ne pas voir le mal partout, mieux vaut se plonger dans ce bain d'adrénaline et de testostérone qui mijote à feu doux. MOB RESEARCH, c'est un peu comme un boys-band mais avec plus de couilles. Avec Kory Clarke (WARRIOR SOUL), Mark Gemini Thwaite (THE MISSION) et Nick Lucero (ex-QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE) aux manettes, c'est juste de la protéine en lingots qui est servie. On reconnaît d'ailleurs le style industriel et musclé de MINISTRY dans le jeu de basse de Raven, qui déteint sur le Rock / Metal faussement sudiste de MOB RESEARCH. Gonflé par une production typiquement US, ce disque a pour divertissement premier de proposer des morceaux calibrés, ciblés, entêtants. De l'excellente "Tribe" à "Skull And Bones" en passant par la sournoise "Sky God Worshippers", c'est une avalanche de tubes à l'américaine qui est se déclenche. Le sol se dérobe sous nos pas à l'écoute de ces guitares bodybuildées, de ces arrangements discrets, de ce refrain qui tue, propulsé vers les sommets par la voix rauque stéréotypée de Clarke. Aucun problème, MOB RESEARCH, en vieux roublards, atteint son objectif sans trop transpirer, jouant le coup à l'expérience. Mais la recette a aussi ses limites, et l'auditoire n'est pas qu'un conglomérat de minettes affamées de viande mortifiée. Ça, le quatuor l'a un peu oublié et se permet quelques facilités qui ne rendent pas vraiment hommage aux parcours respectifs de ses musiciens. Certains titres sont vraiment naïfs, puent l'eau de rose à plein nez et forcément, font tâche dans cette escalade de virilité assumée. Par ailleurs, et c'est là le gros ratage d'Holy City Zoo, sur les 17 titres choisis, 7 sont des remixs sauce Electro / Dance d'artistes et DJ divers et variés (SINDADDY, DJ Rob, ELEKTROFISH, AKANOID et j'en passe). MOB RESEARCH en fait des tonnes, versant dès lors dans une surenchère musicale inappropriée au vu des circonstances. Ce ne serait pas ma façon d'honorer la mémoire d'un proche, c'est peut-être la leur, même si je pense que la décence et la simplicité ne sont pas deux qualités variantes selon qu'on se trouve d'un côté ou de l'autre de l'Atlantique.
Soit. Il n'empêche qu'Holy City Zoo est digne d'un grand intérêt. Non seulement car il est l'une des dernières sorties studio de Paul Vincent Raven, mais également car son contenu est conforme à l'idée qu'on se fait d'un bon groupe de Metal US, toujours doué pour la broderie mais aussi pour faire circuler des paramètres / sentiments assez primitifs : bonne humeur, puissance, fluidité, percussion. La musique pour ce qu'elle est, et pas forcément davantage.
