D'emblée, il y a en Wonderful World War quelque chose de l'ordre de l'évocation. L'ombre menaçante de KICKBACK rôde, et c'est le fruit du hasard, car on connaît mieux NO SURRENDER comme un album que comme un groupe. Mais ne vous y trompez pas, le Diable ne rit pas avec nous ici. Il pleure même. Car aussi malintentionné soit-il, la fadeur n'est pas son arme favorite. Et puisqu'à ce niveau, on sera servi, autant se rassurer comme on peut et imaginer dans cette pochette la réinterprétation laborieuse de celle d'Awaken The Dreamers d'ALL SHALL PERISH. Pour peu qu'une influence doit se ressentir dans un jeune groupe de Metalcore, autant prendre la meilleure. Formé en mai 2008 autour des carcasses de PSYKOSIDE et ROTTEN TO THE CORE, le groupe caennais ne pouvait orchestrer plus brillant suicide que ce premier album, paru en avril 2009.
On l'aura suffisament répété ces dernières années, mais pour exister au cœur de la scène Metalcore, être approximativement bon ne suffit pas. Problème : NO SURRENDER est approximativement bon. Et encore, ça c'est le verre à moitié plein. En effet, si Wonderful World War déborde d'amour, de sincérité, de vitalité, toussa toussa, il manque clairement de construction et de pertinence pour s'inscrire ne serait-ce qu'éphémèrement dans le paysage Metalcore tricolore. Certains albums font illusion un certain laps de temps avant de sombrer progressivement dans l'oubli. Pas celui-là. "Kill Your Master" entretient péniblement le doute, mais déjà, cette combinaison de riffs Death et de Metalcore mélodique sur le refrain est révélatrice d'une certaine faiblesse. Totalement enraciné dans son Metalcore stéréotypé, rabâchant sans cesse des clichés bien bourrins, NO SURRENDER propose, et c'est déjà pas si mal. J'ai du mal à imaginer qu'on puisse être sensible aux errances d'esprit de "Point Of No Return" ou de "I Am What I Am". Cependant, on appréciera le sens de l'écriture. Les Caennais ont bossé pour cet album, ont tenté de varier les rythmes, les textures, les voix, et Dieu seul sait si avec une production un peu plus décente, Wonderful World War aurait pu dévoiler d'autres atouts. Mais le mal est fait. Symbole de cette course d'idées à contre-courant, "Blue Water", une composition Grindo-délirante de 39 secondes qui tombe dans la tracklist comme un cheveu sur la soupe. Alors vous pourrez bien dire que je ne sais pas ce que je veux, que je critique le changement en son absence puis en sa présence, mais il y a l'art et la manière de faire les choses et l'un dans l'autre, NO SURRENDER ne souffre que trop de son manque cruel d'expérience.
Ce qui me peine le plus, c'est de ne pas pouvoir dire que ce quintet est prometteur, car il ne laisse aucune piste, aucun indice qui irait dans ce sens. Wonderful World War déroule ses 41 minutes dans l'indifférence la plus totale, plante son grain dans un terreau stérile d'où rarement jaillit une végétation luxuriante. Malheureusement, la fatalité et l'ironie veulent que cette chronique ait été extrêmement facile à rédiger, la médiocrité étant un paramètre qui transpire d'universalité. Si NO SURRENDER, fort de son énergie, a aussi les moyens de me faire taire, alors qu'ils en fassent usage le plus rapidement possible.
