A quoi bon vouloir qualifier le genre ou le sous genre d'un album dès lors qu'on prend plaisir à l'écouter ? C'est ce que je me suis dit à ma première écoute de l'album éponyme de ce jeune groupe. Je le classe en Stoner par affinité mais c'est plus un jugement sur l'ambiance que dégage le groove de DOT LEGACY...
De plus en plus de formations, même matures s'affranchissent d'un genre en particulier pour livrer au long d'un album différente expériences musicales (MASTODON, KVELERTAK,...). La classification est finalement plus une technique de chroniqueur pour catégoriser sa review dans le bon chapitre de son webzine ou de disquaire (il en reste ?), pour ranger la galette dans le bon bac. Mais on ne doit pas brider la créativité d'un artiste en lui disant, "Mon gars, tu m'as vendu du Stoner, alors tu mets ta chemise à carreaux, tu parles de drogue et tu joues des rythme hypnotiques, sinon le public va pas comprendre ce que tu fais" (et encore, je ne parle pas d'autres genres bien plus codifiés que le Stoner). <rb>
Mais revenons à nos moutons. DOT LEGACY, c'est un quatuor parisiens. Damien Quintard (leads vocal, basse), Arnaud Merckling (guitar, keyboard, back vocal), John Defontaine (guitar, back vocal) et Romain Mottier (drums, back vocals). Ca fait déjà plusieurs années qu'ils tournent en live et c'est leur premier album. Ils l'ont d'abord publié en autoproduction avant d'être repérés et réédités par le label berlinois Setalight Records.
On reproche souvent aux jeunes groupes de ne pas arriver à se différencier de leurs glorieuses références. Un piège dans lequel DOT LEGACY ne tombe pas. Il y a indéniablement quelque chose de vintage dans le son du combo, mais on ne peut pas limiter sa musique à une resucée de gloires du passé.
C'est plutôt un climat d'ensemble, un son oldie. Evident lorsque Arnaud abandonne sa six cordes pour un tour endiablé d'orgue électrique sur "Rumbera" où quand Damien passe au micro à distorsion sur "Think Of A Name" et "Kennedy". Mais au-delà de ces marqueurs, c'est le son du groupe qui nous plonge dans des sonorités anciennes et envoutantes.
Ne se laissant pas piéger par la tentation du tout vintage, l'album alterne les tempo et les styles. Quelques belles accélérations succèdent à des morceaux plus smooth. Une utilisation raisonnable de la distorsion (elle est là au bon moment mais n'envahit pas tout le disque). Le groupe fait preuve d'une maîtrise et d'une créativité dignes de formations plus matures.
La sagesse n'attend pas le nombre des années. DOT LEGACY livre un premier album de qualité et qui laisse présager un avenir radieux. Espérons que les quatre parisiens confirmeront bientôt l'essai.
