CAVE STATE nous vient tout droit de Californie, mais il faut chercher loin, très loin même des traces de soleil dans leur musique.
Ce groupe, c'est un peu l'emblème involontaire d'une scène underground ricaine qui s'agite aux soubresauts d'un Powerviolence sans concessions, aux doux accents de Crust Grind. Pas de prise de tête, l'essentiel est dit de façon concise et rapide, et après une première démo en 2013, ils reviennent en début d'année suivante avec un 7'' qui ne fait qu'entériner le discours tenu quelques mois auparavant.
Dans le cas de groupes comme CAVE STATE, un 7'' sorti sur un label à 600 copies, fait souvent office d'album, en tout cas de carte de visite professionnelle qui donne un très bon aperçu de leurs capacités.
Peu d'infos sur le net, juste un Bandcamp (leur page Facebook à disparu), un blog annonçant leurs concerts à venir, mais après tout, l'essentiel est là non ?
Et puis avec onze morceaux pour à peine huit minutes de chaos, inutile d'essayer de dresser un arbre généalogique. Sachez juste que leur démo a fait grand bruit dans le landerneau de l'underground en 2013, et que beaucoup voyaient en eux un certain futur du Powerviolence. Avec des influences louchant grave du côté d'INFEST et CROSSED OUT, CAVE STATE ne s'embarrasse pas de principes. Les onze morceaux donnent le sentiment d'avoir été enregistrés live d'une traite, ce qui laisse entrevoir un potentiel live assez impressionnant. Mais pas question ici d'agression sans queue ni tête à grands coups de blasts répétés jusqu'à l'overdose. On module, on entrecroise des passages furieusement Crust à des break Heavy du meilleur ton, en gros, on cherche par tous les moyens à être efficace tout en déstabilisant l'auditeur.
Doté d'un son épais et gras, un peu sourd sur les bords, qui confère aux guitares un écho un peu distant pas désagréable du tout, Cave State met en avant une rythmique polyvalente dominée par une batterie tentaculaire, soutenue par une basse gironde et distordue qui catapulte un chant un peu en retrait dans les méandres de ses évolutions. Ce dernier, assez particulier, pourra en rebuter certains, tant il se complait à rester dans des tonalités aigues et stridentes. Je trouve au contraire qu'il apporte encore plus de folie à l'ambiance, agissant comme un discours politique scandé au milieu d'un chaos de protestations. Musicalement, l'affaire tourne rond (normal pour un single), les riffs font leur boulot en restant catchy et sombres à la fois, même si on regrette souvent que les chansons ne développent pas plus certains thèmes qui sont juste frôlés. C'est bien sûr très rapide, très alambiqué parfois, mais l'efficacité est indéniable, et dans la masse grouillante des sorties Crust/Grind/Powerviolence, CAVE STATE tire largement son épingle du jeu pour se hisser au niveau des meilleures productions.
On attendra évidemment la sortie d'un éventuel long format pour juger de la pertinence de la démarche des américains, mais avec une telle carte de visite, impossible de ne pas être aux aguets.
Si vous êtes vous même californien ou y résidant temporairement, ne les ratez pas lors d'une de ces soirées regroupant cinq ou six groupes aussi efficaces. La fête risque d'être torride.
