Jeunes irlandais malintentionnés et doués cherchent raison d'être.
Pour que renaisse GROUND OF RUIN et son sens du méfait. En activité pendant une bonne demi-douzaine d'années (entre 2003 et 2009), ce groupe aura tout juste eu le temps de faire (très) forte impression avant de manœuvrer une séparation sibylline qui laisse forcément un goût amer. Amer comme la bile crachée sur Cloaked In Doctrine, un second EP qui, deux ans après Visions Of Obscenity, devait leur ouvrir la porte du full-lenght attendu et espéré. Sauf que l'EP en question ponctue d'un point final une discographie à peine entamée, et que les regrets seront à-peu-près aussi nombreux que les mauvaises intentions de cette sortie remarquable mais peu remarquée.
Oeuvrant dans une émulsion instable de Black, de Death et de Thrash, GROUND OF RUIN représente l'alchimie idyllique d'un underground européen jamais à court d'idées. Et pourtant, Cloaked In Doctrine n'est pas ce disque de Metal extrême révolutionnaire. Il l'est néanmoins par excellence, doté d'un sens primitif du blasphème, d'une agressivité authentique, d'un état d'esprit belliqueux et résolument provoc', d'influences universelles et d'une écriture à peine perfectible. Après une longue mais riche introduction acoustique ("Upon The 13th Hour"), les Irlandais balancent un premier titre qui va mettre tout le monde d'accord. Vitesse supersonique, production glaçante qui fait ressortir principalement la batterie, guitare lead conduisant le morceau dans des retranchements mystiques ; on pourrait limite affirmer qu'on est en présence du DISSECTION du pauvre si STORTREGN n'avait pas déjà fait de cette étiquette un gage de qualité. On préfèrera alors se concentrer sur des formations plus typées : GORGOROTH (ou ONDSKAPT) pour l'odeur de souffre, SLAYER pour le maniement du riff, NAGLFAR pour le sens de la mélodie. Et pourquoi ne pas simplement évoquer GROUND OF RUIN en tant qu'entité à temps plein pour récompenser le monumental travail ici accompli ? Car bien que composée de seulement trois compositions, Cloaked In Doctrine connaitra un déroulement similaire aux meilleurs albums du genre : ceux qui contiennent autant de morceaux que d'émotions. Qu'il s'agisse donc de "Cloaked In Doctrine", le Monsieur Propre de l'EP, ou de "Burning The Olive Branch" et "Beneath Contempt", un seul constat : ces Irlandais sont réguliers dans la performance, il est vrai bien aidés par un vocaliste en transe dont la voix plus "harsch" que Black offre une profondeur toujours plus démoniaque à l'opus. Synthétisant à la fois nos peurs et nos besoins les plus extrêmes, Cloaked In Doctrine se fend d'une atmosphère détestable qui sied à merveille au côté strictement technique, lui aussi presque irréprochable.
Avec à son actif un EP d'un tel acabit, difficile d'accepter l'idée que GROUND OF RUIN ait préféré la séparation à la continuité. Leurs raisons nous échappent sans vraiment nous concerner, mais quand on tient entre les mains une pépite de Blackened Death de ce style, le raisonnement qui en découle est forcément égoïste : un groupe a priori talentueux et efficace vient de se perdre à jamais pour nos oreilles. Alors on n'aura d'autre alternative que de faire se répéter Cloaked In Doctrine, dans l'espoir que le nœud coulant qui nous enlace la gorge se montrera à chaque fois aussi étroit.
