Birth. Naissance. Qu'il est loin, le temps où les Bordelais d'E-BREED (prononcez "hybride", évidement) en étaient encore à la distribution des faire-part. A l'heure où j'écris ces lignes, l'enterrement est déjà passé. Son cœur s'est arrêté de battre le 19 janvier 2013, victime de divergences musicales. Il laisse derrière lui trois sorties : une démo (Birth en 2005), un album (-273° en 2009) et un EP (The Alternative en 2012). Peut-être que nous regretteront cette absence. Peut-être pas. L'avenir nous le dira. Néanmoins, parlons au présent de cette première démo de 2005, qui a eu le mérite de lancer leur carrière à une époque où E-BREED était surtout connu pour être "le nouveau groupe de Pumah, ex-VIRIDIANA". Du charabia autant que de la littérature. Seuls les faits importent, et ces derniers n'ont pas vendu E-BREED avec les arguments les plus imparables, loin de là.
Mauvais commercial, mauvais élève de la classe Rock / Metal française en son temps, ce groupe du grand sud-ouest a manifestement concocté pour ses débuts un gloubiboulga sous acides et couvert de blessures. Un e-Metal écorché vif entre Electro jumpy à la PLEYMO et Neo râpeux à la ENHANCER, le tout emmailloté de touches Hardcore et Prog. La jeunesse est source d'amalgames et E-BREED en fait un beau avec Birth. Brouillon qui servira à dessiner les contours autrement plus propres de -273° quatre ans plus tard, cette démo se perd rapidement entre les arrangements électroniques d'"Again" (et ses paroles un peu vaseuses il faut l'avouer), la fureur mal maitrisée de "La Pieuvre" qui œuvre dans un chaud-froid rythmique tentaculaire peu raffiné, la très futuriste "Fallen" et la plus rugueuse "Schizo ?". Inégal et fourre-tout, Birth fait office de sandwich caviar-ketchup dans un univers binaire où faire la différence entre 0 et 1 suffit parfois. Ça leur suffit en tout cas pour faire de ce premier jet un disque énergique mais fade, reposant sur des fondations artificielles (merci Pumah, ex-VIRIDIANA), des arrangements synthétiques et du Neo / Hardcore en conserve. De DEFTONES à LINKIN PARK sans oublier FAITH NO MORE et STAIND, E-BREED ronronne son Metal en misant sur une section rythmique dopée aux cadences US et une voix rageuse (autant que juste, soulignons-le). Pas assez pour s'extraire du premier coup de la masse. Mais un évènement inattendu va changer la donne, épurer le verdict, soulager les Bordelais d'une médiocrité intégrale. "Once", avec ses relents Post-Hardcore (EMAROSA ?), son tempo éléphantesque, ses envolées vocales sincères, son break reposant va, avec beaucoup de retard, leur montrer la marche à suivre pour faire bouillir le sang des durs à cuire. Il était presque trop tard.
Presque, mais E-BREED sauve l'essentiel et se préserve d'un opus sur lequel il n'y aurait rien à sauver. Et puisque souvent on garde bon ou mauvais souvenir d'un repas en fonction du dessert, assumons de trouver Birth déséquilibré mais fatalement malin dans ses derniers instants. Après un quart d'heure de ronchonneries du type "Bordelais, sauras-tu nous proposer autre chose que du bon vin ?", la fatalité veut que l'on reste coi face à un ultime et unique rebondissement. Celui qui fera seul l'attrait de cette démo, et l'avenir tellement plus brillant (et finalement dramatique) d'une formation qui aura eu la persévérance pour elle.
