Un album de Prog Métal Néoclassique, il n’y avait vraiment que des Américains pour nous trouver une formule aussi alambiquée. « Believe in Angels » est le premier et très décevant album de Seven Seraphim, nouveaux poulains de l’écurie Scarlet Records. La fiche promo nous annonçait des influences assez diverses ; il ne s’agit en fait que d’un sous Rising Force auquel manque le génie de Malmsteen.
Certes, comme tout album à tendance progressive, il convient de l’écouter plusieurs fois. Mais même après lui avoir donné sa chance, on reste sur une impression de fouillis sans nom. Aucune structure réelle aux morceaux, qui paraissent traîner en longueur. Le plus long titre n’atteint pas les 7 minutes et pourtant, on s’ennuie. C’est rageant parce qu’il ne leur faudrait sûrement pas grand-chose. Ce groupe très technique comprend de bons musiciens, notamment le guitariste Andrew Szucs. Mais tous les morceaux tournent à l’exercice d’échauffement pour guitare et la gratte phagocyte tous les autres instruments. Le côté « m’as-tu vu » est assez déplaisant.
L’introduction, « Atmosphere Collide », est horripilante et les trois chansons qui suivent sont sans intérêt. « Anastasia », par exemple, est symptomatique de cette présence démesurée de la guitare et a un effet anesthésiant qui rend bizarrement mal à l’aise. Les choses s’améliorent à partir de « Song Blaque », avec surtout « Dance in the Red » et « The Rain keeps Falling ». Les mélodies deviennent plus accrocheuses, les morceaux plus efficaces et les instruments s’expriment mieux. Le clavier, qui ne figure pourtant pas dans le line-up, se fait plus présent et souligne de ses accents de clavecin les influences classiques du groupe. Ces titres plus équilibrés sont hélas d’une grande banalité. La fin de l’album retombe dans le solo de guitare plaqué –parfois de façon très acrobatique– au milieu des compositions, ce qui est indéniablement le plus grand travers de l’album.
Ce n’est malheureusement pas avec « Believe in Angels » que Seven Seraphim nous fera croire aux anges.
