C’est avec un très bon album qu’Arena débutera l’année 2005, puisque Pepper’s Ghost sortira le 17 janvier prochain. Après plusieurs albums bien accueillis par la critique comme le public, le groupe s’attaque cette fois au thème difficile de l’illusion, de la perception humaine et des erreurs qu’elle peut induire, pouvant conduire à la folie.
Parlons d’abord de l’artwork, brillement exécuté par David Wyatt, l’illustrateur de Terry Pratchett (vous savez, ce génial auteur, créateur du Discworld !). Nos cinq britanniques y sont représentés sous les traits de héros de bande dessinée rappelant la Ligue des Gentlemen Extraordinaires (LEG pour les initiés). Chemise à jabot et costume de dandy dans le Londres du XIXème siècle, voici un univers gothique –développé dans le livret– qui ne peut que plaire aux fans de progressif.
Le titre, Pepper’s Ghost, fait référence à l’un des premiers effets spéciaux utilisés au théâtre. Ce fantôme de Pepper est une illusion d’optique basée sur un jeu de miroirs et permettant à un acteur de se matérialiser progressivement sur scène. D’où le titre « Smoke and Mirrors », qui n’a donc rien à voir avec le morceau de Symphony X. Après une première écoute, vous vous surprendrez peut-être à fredonner « The Eyes of Lara Moon » tant son refrain est entêtant et sa petite mélodie de guitare, simple et efficace, est répétitive. Je citerai encore le grandiose « Opera Fanatica », un morceau plein d’emphase, avec ses chanteurs d’opéra et ses orgues.
Il s’agit là d’un album subtile, tantôt agressif, tantôt empli de tristesse, où l’étrange se mêle au poétique. Si l’on sent bien la maîtrise, chaque instrument sert la composition sans faire étalage de technique. La guitare n’est jamais trop insistante mais marque la mélodie ; le clavier est au service de l’atmosphère. Tout cela forme une musique très homogène, aux harmonies vocales particulièrement travaillées. Une belle réussite… et ce n’est pas qu’une illusion.
