On sait généralement quelle créature mythique et fabuleuse garde un donjon. Ainsi, DARKENHÖLD rôde autour de son précieux, tel un dragon susceptible prêt à gronder, brûler, briser et mourir pour son territoire. En-haut de la plus haute tour, point de princesse assoupie, juste une vierge torturée au nom de l'Art Noir, que ce trio défend depuis sa création en 2008, suite à la rencontre entre Aldébaran (ex-ARTEFACT) et Cervantes. DARKENHÖLD a fait du Black Metal son credo, un retour aux "heures originelles" agrémenté d'un univers médiéval, où bosquets ténébreux et douves nourries du sang des téméraires se déploient. Première pierre sur laquelle les Français ont bâti leur "Eglise", A Passage To The Towers est l'incipit, le Décalogue recensant leurs dix premiers commandements comme autant de chapitres d'un livre charbonneux.
Aucune méprise n'est envisageable. DARKENHÖLD jouit d'un concept pas forcément inédit mais ô combien intense. Cette façon de marier l'essence même du Black Metal et l'eau croupie dans laquelle pataugent leurs arrangements moyenâgeux est remarquable. Eventail de textures brulantes, de voix (hurlements, narration, râles...), de claviers stellaires (comme sur la remarquable "Citadel Of Obsidian Slumber" qui synthétise un peu leurs possibilités diverses), A Passage To The Towers se veut à la fois envoutant et imprenable. Hypnotique même, quand le trio conduit par une sorte de mage noir qu'est Aldéraban se permet des chevauchées épiques qui jouxtent une écriture du Black Metal plutôt conventionnelle. "Chains Of The Wyvern Shelter" fait par exemple partie de ces compositions transparentes mais dont l'impact manifeste ne permet aucune rupture de rythme, et ce en dépit d'un ralentissement organique à 2'14. DARKENHÖLD a l'immense mérite d'avoir construit ici un premier album fort, marquant, qui cède du terrain à la rêverie et aux mythes. Pour peu que votre esprit se prête à ce genre d'imaginaire, vous n'aurez aucun problème pour vous immerger corps et âme dans cette forteresse fièrement défendue. A la croisée d'une bataille ancestrale et d'une messe interdite, A Passage To The Towers mêle brutalité et spiritualité, le tout moucheté de mélodies planantes ("Cleaving The Ethereal Waves"). Dans l'œil du cyclone, un interlude comme "In The Crystal Cavern" permet une transition intelligente, avant que le trio, dont la cohésion interpelle, n'embraye sur deux des morceaux les plus intenses de l'opus : "Crimson Legions" et "Darkenhöld". Parachevé par un "Sorcery" aux rythmiques Black N' Roll, ce full-lenght se termine sur le gout ferré du sang. Une réussite qui ne lui donne pas accès à une gloire spontanée, mais qui suffira à tout amateur de Black Metal correctement "atmosphérisé".
Entre les cadavres d'arbres calcinés et la lisière de ronces, le dragon DARKENHÖLD a fait de ce premier méfait une citadelle sur laquelle règne une épaisse autorité, guidée par un sens du Black Metal vif et engageant. Ce n'est d'ailleurs pas un hasard si, transperçant une meurtrière nommée Echoes From The Stone Keeper, le trio aura accentué deux ans plus tard sa souveraineté en terre tricolore. A Passage To The Towers était un signe avant-coureur de cette domination onirique, rompue à l'exercice comme aucun autre chevalier.
