La semaine dernière, la Finlande annonçait être le premier pays à bénéficier de l'inscription d'emoticones nationales dans la nomenclature officielle des emote (car il y en a une). Les quatre emote nationaux sont : un téléphone Nokia, un homme nu dans un sauna, une femme nue dans un sauna et un metaleux, cheveux longs et gilet de cuir qui fait une mano cornuta de chaque main. La Finlande affirme ainsi qu'elle ne manque pas d'humour mais aussi qu'elle est l'une des patries du Metal européen. Deux choses que les finnois avaient déjà démontré en 2006, lorsque LORDI a représenté la Finlande au concours de l'Eurovision. C'est ce choix atypique et sacrément malin qui permit aux finnois de remporter leur premier concours de l'Eurovision, n'en déplaise à Michel Drucker commentateur de l'événement pour la France, dont la célèbre sortie est restée dans les annales du chauvinisme et de l'étroitesse d'esprit "La Finlande n'a jamais gagné l'Eurovision. Eh bien, c'est pas avec ça qu'elle va gagner".
Pourtant, si la scène Metal finnoise est plutôt active, les groupes de Doom y sont rares. Et leur renommée n'a que rarement traversé la Baltique (comme SHAPE OF DESPAIR, groupe de Funeral Doom Metal qui s'est produit au dernier Hellfest). Le pays réunit pourtant tous les ingrédients pour inspirer la mélancolie. Avec ses grandes plaines tourbeuses balayées par les vents et ses nuits polaires qui durent 16 heures... Oui, il y a vraiment du potentiel pour le Doom en Finlande.
Grâce au label montpellierain Lost Pilgrim Records qui les a signés pour leur premier album, sorti cette année, on peut désormais découvrir le Doom / Stoner / Heavy Psych de BOAR, quatuor fondé en 2009 à Oulu, une grande ville du nord du pays, pas très loin de la Laponie. Le gang a déjà sorti deux EP et un split. Venificae est leur premier album. Il a été composé, enregistré et produit par la formation aux Stoner Katakombs of Doom.
L'album distille six pistes d'un d'un Doom Psych certes sincère et plein d'allant. Une section rythmique grasse, lourde et mastoc, une guitare bien lente qui ménage ses effets avant d'exploser en envolées psychédéliques qui n'en finissent plus. Un chant rocailleux et usé entre râle d'agonisant et hurlement de bête blessée, à la limite de l'anecdote tant il est placé en retrait par rapport aux instruments. L'album bénéficie d'une production paradoxale. A la fois très sale et très propre. On retrouve le son poussiéreux caractéristique des projets Doom mais les performances de chaque instruments se découpent bien sur le fonds harmonique. C'est une musique dont l'apparente spontanéité primale repose sur un travail d'écriture et de construction remarquable.
Dans le genre Doom progressif à la sauce 70', Venificae est un opus plein de promesses, très agréable à écouter. Mais ce debut album de BOAR manque cruellement d'originalité. Il faudrait au disque un petit quelque chose en plus pour le distinguer et lui conférer un intérêt durable.
