Sorti dans les bacs le 11 octobre 2004, Reckoning Night figure incontestablement parmi les meilleurs albums de Speed Mélodique de l’année. Il semble bien que Sonata Arcitca arrivera toujours à nous surprendre par des albums d’excellente qualité, renouvelant sans cesse son style pourtant toujours reconnaissable entre tous.
« Misplaced » constitue une parfaite introduction à ce nouvel opus, avec son refrain scandé, et montre le haut niveau du Speed de l’album. On retrouve bien sûr les principaux thèmes chers à nos Finlandais : les amours malheureuses, les éléments déchaînés, le soleil et la lune, le loup (-garou). Reckoning Night est un album très complet et homogène. Plusieurs titres se fondent, la fin de l’un introduisant l’autre. Les riffs de guitare sont accrocheurs, les chœurs travaillés de façon très intéressante. Le tout donne une impression plus passionnée et agressive que ce à quoi nous avait habitué le groupe.
« Wildfire » se démarque nettement des autres titres –ne vous fiez pas aux premières mesures ! La participation de Nik Van Eckmann, avec qui le groupe a l’habitude de travailler, y est pour beaucoup. Sa voix grave, à la limite parfois du Métal extrême, vient compléter l’extrême agressivité de Tony Kakko, qui peut ici montrer toute sa puissance vocale. Le dramatique y est renforcé par les sons d’orgue, majestueux. D’une composition assez complexe, on ne se lasse pas d’écouter ce titre purement génial.
« Don’t Say a Word » est un autre grand moment de l’album. La dichotomie du personnage, partagé entre son ancien et pur amour et sa présente haine, sa soif de vengeance, est magnifiquement rendue par les constants changements de voix de Tony Kakko et les interventions gutturales et inquiétantes de Monsieur Van Eckmann.
On notera également le travail vocal de Tony sur « White Pearl, Black Oceans », l’histoire d’un gardien de phare torturé de remords pour avoir laissé par mégarde s’éteindre la lampe et provoqué ainsi un effroyable naufrage. Par exemple, un mot terrible, contradictoirement presque chuchoté, renforce singulièrement sa portée. L’émotion est forte.
Viennent compléter ce bel ensemble une jolie ballade –mais triste, évidemment !– et un morceau instrumental, « Reckoning Day, Reckoning Night », assez envoûtant et mélancolique à souhait. Etrange et légèrement inquiétant, il fait penser au chant des sirènes et constitue une pause agréable entre des morceaux plus rapides.
Une bien belle réussite, force est de le reconnaître !
