La réunion des anciens membres de GUNS & ROSES pouvait nous faire espérer le meilleur ou craindre le pire. C’est finalement un sentiment plus indistinct que l’on ressent après l’écoute de cet album. Le groupe a su échapper à l’écueil de la copie pure et simple de Guns tout en évitant de changer radicalement de style et, là encore, on navigue entre deux eaux. L’album tire davantage du coté de STONE TEMPLE PILOT que de Guns, et le chant de Scott Weiland n’explique pas tout car, musicalement aussi, les musiciens se sont emparés de ce style. On retrouve donc ce dynamisme dans l’écriture, ce coté « brut », et puis l’aspect auquel on pouvait s’attendre : un ton rocailleux, hargneux, bref Rock n’Roll. Du coup, Scott Weiland, que beaucoup attendaient au tournant, s’en tire à merveille vu que cet opus est presque fait sur mesure.
Contraband est un bon album qui recèle des titres que l’on ne se lasse pas d’écouter et qui recèlent presque tous des petites trouvailles vraiment agréables. Le tout est le fruit d’un travail sans doute plus soutenu qu’il n’y parait.
Pourtant, il y a un « je ne sais quoi » de déplaisant ; une certaine déception nous gagne au fur et à mesure que les titres s’égrènent. Peut-être espérions-nous, sans vouloir l’avouer, découvrir un album des Guns comme à la grande époque ?
