Ce groupe de Syracuse (New York), qui signe ici son deuxième album, nous plonge dans un Hard Rock nerveux aux influences sudistes. Ne cherchez aucun artifice, les cinq balaises nous envoient leurs riffs purs et durs au visage sans se compliquer la vie. A chaque morceau on les remercie davantage de cette simplicité de bon aloi qui privilégie l’efficacité, car il n’y a rien à changer sur cet album.
Au niveau des influences, il faut citer BLACK LABEL SOCIETY dont ils héritent du côté brut et viril. On peut trouver une parenté avec le Jake E. Lee de BADLANDS (“Freight Train”), avec les derniers METALLICA et, bien sûr, avec les pères du style sudiste : LYNYRD SKYNYRD.
Il n’y a pas de recette miracle dans ce genre-là, ça passe ou ça casse ; et il faut être sacrement bon pour tirer son épingle du jeu. Ça tombe bien, le groupe y parvient à merveille.
Les titres comme “Arrived” qui ouvre l’album en force, le single “Black And Blue”, “Dead Man Walking” ou encore “Days Are Numbered” sont des concentrés d’énergie. Ils sentent le cuir, la poussière du désert et le Colt encore fumant.
Mais n’allez pas les prendre pour de gros bourrins se contentant de jouer fort : BRAND NEW SIN est un excellent groupe dont le secret est d’avoir conservé intactes leurs émotions et leur forte personnalité en dépit de leur puissance de feu. Ainsi les choses s’affinent avec “Vicious Cycles” et “Another Reason”, de vraies réussites.
“Running Alone” et “Once In A Lifetime” sont des ballades (entre mecs) qui ne donnent pas envie de danser !
Enfin, cet excellent moment de Hard Rock s’achève sur “Wyoming” que je n’hésite pas à qualifier de chef d’œuvre !
BRAND NEW SIN crée la surprise. Il n’y a aucune raison de s’en priver.
