Ce nouveau groupe livre ici un premier album bien difficile à qualifier : la base est constituée d’un Power Metal puissant ; on trouve ainsi des riffs musclés et des cavalcades (“Using The Light Forever”), une double-pédale qui n’hésite pas à s’emballer. Mais les Italiens compliquent les choses avec des touches de progressif propices à tenir les clichés à distance des structures musicales de chaque chanson. On peut s’en réjouir car, si le procédé n’est pas nouveau, il est ici exécuté avec talent et conviction. On se réjouira en outre qu’ils se soient éloignés de DREAM THEATER, groupe dont ils avouent avoir été inspirés à leurs débuts, cela nous évite d’avoir un énième clone.
Tenez-vous bien, on trouve aussi des accents Black sur cet album ! C’est léger et discret, mais le chant n’hésite pas à plonger dans les abysses lorsque l’envie lui en prend. C’est plutôt une bonne idée même si l’intervention de ce style déboule sans prévenir, avec des ficelles un peu grosses.
En définitive et contre toute attente, RAINTIME possède un style propre, assez original, éloigné des formules classiques, qui lui évite de grossières comparaisons. En contrepartie, il est difficile de donner une ligne directrice à cet album, il n’en perd par sa cohérence pour autant mais il est assez difficile à définir. Ajoutons que les chœurs sont mixés trop en retrait, ce qui relativise leur intervention.
En dépit de ces quelques petits défauts, RAINTIME réussit sa sortie en livrant cet opus très convaincant.
