Après 9 albums (plus un EP) et plus de 20 ans de carrière, JAG PANZER a réussi à se faire un nom mais n’est pas parvenu à connaître le succès. Ce n’est pas ce nouvel opus qui va lever la malédiction car il manque cruellement d’originalité. On ne peut reprocher à un groupe né en 1983 de rester fidèle à son style mais on pourra déplorer la banalité de certains titres durs à avaler. Ainsi, les américains se sont fait doubler par de nombreuses formations et, paradoxalement, on finit par les comparer à des groupes Européens.
Toutefois, en dépit d’un certain conformisme, Casting The Stones renferme de belles qualités. Notamment celle, toute simple, de nous réserver une petite heure de bon Heavy. Il est vrai qu’on est rapidement pénétré par cette musique bien faite, puissante et propre. Après plusieurs écoutes, les mélodies deviennent familières et l’on profite des quelques trouvailles que le groupe a su nous concocter et qui placent JAG PANZER au dessus de la masse. Car le Power Metal de base évolue souvent vers un Heavy plus travaillé. D’autre part, le chant de Harry “Tyrant” Conklin est toujours aussi personnel ; il constitue une plus-value évidente. De même que la guitare aiguisée de Chris Broderick qui nous livre des solos admirables qui vaudraient à eux seuls le détour.
Casting The Stones n’est pas l’album de l’année et l’on ne prend pas beaucoup de risques en prétendant qu’il sera vite oublié. Pourtant il y a là une part d’injustice car on passe un bon moment à son écoute.
