Avec pour seul interlude la réédition de leur premier album, cela faisait tout de même 3 ans qu’on n’avait pas eu de composition originale de PAGAN’S MIND. Les Norvégiens ont donc pris leur temps pour écrire et le résultat fait plaisir.
Confirmant leur intérêt pour ce mélange adroit entre Power Metal et progressif, les Norvégiens n’ont jamais été aussi à leur aise qu’aujourd’hui. En pleine maturité, en pleine possession de leurs moyens, ils contrôlent parfaitement leur sujet et livrent un album parfaitement écrit. L’adresse des compositions est absolument phénoménale ; à chaque titre on se réjouit des acrobaties musicales que le groupe se permet. Malgré cela, nous ne sommes jamais largués par la complexité des chansons ; le groupe nous plonge dans son univers sans faire preuve de cet égoïsme démonstratif si répandu. Pourtant, de la virtuosité, il y en a ! Ainsi le guitariste Jörn Viggo Lofstad (également en charge de la production) est un petit virtuose qui nous livre des solos extraordinaires sans en faire trop (on devine son attachement à Steve Vai sur les fins de “Enigmatic Mission”, “Celestial Calling” et “Search For Life”). Mais il ne faut pas oublier la rythmique, ni bien sûr le chant de Nils K. Rue. Seul le clavier n’est pas toujours bien en place avec quelques nappes dispensables, mais il fait, par ailleurs, de tels prodiges, qu’on ne peut lui en vouloir.
Le mixage est assuré par Frederik Nordström (producteur de HAMMERFALL et DIMMU BORGIR).
Le groupe a terriblement gagné en maturité et a fait évoluer son style tout en restant fidèle à ses principes de départ. Enigmatic : Calling est plus mélodique que les précédents opus, et est résolument moins Speed. Comme si le groupe prenait son temps, sachant qu’il détient des qualités évidentes.
Les amateurs de prog auraient tort de passer à côté de cet album. Quant aux autres, ils y trouveront peut-être de quoi se réconcilier avec le genre.
