Avec son side project CHROME DIVISION, Shagrath (DIMMU BORGIR) a pour l’occasion troqué les paintings et les clous pour la veste en cuir et les santiags version Easy Rider 2006.
Le ton est vite donné après une intro et une batterie aux accents martiaux : ce premier album de CHROME DIVISION sent la bière, la sueur et la clope. Les influences du groupe se font rapidement sentir, de MOTÖRHEAD (il suffit d’écouter la voix d’Eddie Guz (Shagrath assure les guitares rythmiques sur l’album) ou encore les refrains de « Serial Killer » ou de « When The Shit Hits The Fan ») à SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, en passant par BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, mais aussi, n’en déplaisent à certains, METALLICA période St. Anger, le bruit de casserole de la batterie en moins (« Hate »).
L’enthousiasme du groupe est indéniable et particulièrement communicatif : on ne peut s’empêcher de taper du pied, au point d’en ressentir des crampes, sur l’ensemble des morceaux ; les refrains sont rapidement mémorisables (« Trouble With The Law », « Here Comes Another One », « When The Shit Hits The Fan ») et l’on s’imagine déjà les hurler avec ses acolytes lors d’une future prestation live.
Si le combo offre des moments accrocheurs (les solos de guitare sur « Serial Killer », « Here Comes Another One », de basse sur « Serial Killer », l’intro de « 1st Regiment ») ou particulièrement surprenants (« Chrome Division » et ses accents maideniens), l’auditeur a pourtant parfois l’impression que CHROME DIVISION a opté pour la facilité, renouant avec un certain esprit Rock’n Roll, à défaut d’accès sur l’originalité ou la technicité, avec des morceaux de qualité homogène, aucun titre ne se détachant véritablement du lot.
Doomsday Rock’n Roll n’en reste pas moins d’une redoutable efficacité, à écouter fort chez soi entre amis ou dans un bar de bikers enfumé aux serveuses topless.
