En gagnant l’Eurovision, LORDI aura fait couler beaucoup d’encre et délier de nombreuses langues. Choquant, scandaleux, monstrueux, décadent… LORDI a eu droit à tous les qualificatifs. Pourtant, hormis les vieilles dames et Michel Drucker, qui a vraiment peur de LORDI ?
Pompant les bonnes vieilles recettes de GWAR, de KISS et d’Alice Cooper – dont ils empruntent aussi beaucoup sur le plan musical – LORDI joue la provoc’ bon marché et l’humour. Qui peut vraiment voir dans ce grand guignol un déclin de la civilisation ? Les mecs de LORDI sont des monstres gentils menés par un Casimir à la voix rocailleuse. Leur musique ne laisse d’ailleurs aucun doute sur le caractère inoffensif de ces Finlandais : un Hard Rock mélodique piochant allègrement dans le savoir-faire des années 80. Les amateurs de cette époque ne s’y tromperont pas. Ils n’auront pas non plus d’occasion de se plaindre de la qualité de cet album qui, par bien des aspects, tient ses promesses.
Outre le hit « Hard Rock Hallelujah », le groupe nous réserve quelques agréables surprises : « Who’s Your Daddy », « Chainsaw Buffet » et même la participation de Udo Dirkschneider (ex-ACCEPT). Peu de gros riffs, beaucoup de mélodies – souvent réussies – et un gros travail sur les refrains. Ces derniers – volontiers racoleurs – sont extrêmement efficaces, il sera difficile de se sortir « Supermonstar » de la tête.
Certes, LORDI n’est pas un groupe majeur sur le plan musical (il ne le sera probablement jamais), il se contente de reprendre ce qui a déjà été fait. Mais, dans cet exercice, les Finlandais excellent et livre ici un album frais et agréable.
Et puis, LORDI aura eu le mérite de mettre le doigt sur l’indigence de la variété française…
