Quelques mois (6) après la réédition de l’album Eric The Red, TYR, groupe de viking Metal venant des îles Féroé, propose son troisième opus intitulé Ragnarok. Le moins que l’on puisse dire c’est que ce groupe a réussi à faire parler de lui et la reconnaissance du public devient de plus en plus importante. Il est vrai que la réédition d’Eric The Red, qui a bénéficié d’une promotion conséquente, a laissé de très bonnes impressions malgré la qualité inégale des morceaux.
Comme son prédécesseur Ragnarok bénéficie d’un artwork et d’une pochette magnifique représentant un champ de bataille viking : le Ragnarok !!! (l’édition limitée en digipack est agrémentée de deux titres bonus).
Musicalement le groupe a beaucoup évolué depuis d’Eric The Red. Les compos ont une touche beaucoup plus Heavy/progressif, accompagnée par un chant folk traditionnel, avec ce timbre de voix toujours aussi particulier et remarquable. Les titres sont beaucoup plus personnels et ne reprennent pas les mélodies de chants traditionnels irlandais ou norvégiens. Le coté festif et folk a donc beaucoup disparu, et cela se ressent dans les mélodies. Celles-ci sont beaucoup moins assimilables et donne un effet plus complexe à l’album qui du coup devient plat et assez médiocre (« The Hammer Of Thor » ou « The Ride Of Hel »).
Ces changements influent énormément sur l’originalité et l’impact des morceaux. Ceux-ci deviennent plus moyens, il n’y a pas d’hymne qui pourrait sortir de Ragnarok. Les morceaux sont moyens et beaucoup moins inspirés que sur les précédentes galettes du groupe. La première impression est que TYR a choisi la facilité pour sortir un album tant que le fer était encore chaud. Les très nombreuses interludes peuvent en témoigner : souvent on se demande quelle est leur utilité si ce n’est pour autre chose que du remplissage. D’accord l’intro uniquement musicale, sobrement intitulée : « The Beginning » est de toute beauté mais ne suffit pas à sauver le drakkar TYR du naufrage. Même « Wings Of Time » qui aurait pu se retrouver sur Erik The Red n’a pas l’effet escompté. L’ensemble est lassant et les quelques bons moments (« The Hunt » par exemple) sont beaucoup trop rares pour casser ce sentiment. Cela est fort dommage car de nombreux espoirs ont été mis dans l’attente de cet album.
