DEATH BEFORE DISCO. La mort avant le disco qu’ils disent. Formé en 2003, ce combo a déjà sorti un premier opus Party Bullets chez le label Goodlife Recordings. Originaire de notre sympathique voisine la Belgique, ce jeune quintet issu du groupe PRIGHT en 2000 rapidement mis au placard pour manque d’originalité latente livre avec Barricades son second opus sur le label spécialiste des groupes de Metalcore Européens Lifeforce Records. Sauf qu’ici on ne parlera pas de Metalcore à vrai dire. D’après la propre maison de disques, DEATH BEFORE DISCO fusionnes soit disant à la perfection des éléments expérimentaux à la THRICE avec le côté Hard-Rock des FOO FIGHTERS et les sensibilités Prog Rock contemporaines à la MARS VOLTA !
Le tout devant être une des sortie les plus captivante de cette année ! Rien que çà ! De l’Emocore de la nouvelle vague des années 2000 THRICE et MARS VOLTA connus des factions de teenagers, on ne dira pas que ce sont les formations les plus novatrices qui soient. C’est un peu l’arbre qui cache la forêt avec ce genre de groupe, une multitude d’influences et de détails aboutissant à un résultat proche du vide et du nihil. Et quant aux fameux FOO FIGHTERS, son leader Dave Grohl aura beau se démener et mettre toute son énergie dans ce groupe, on se souviendra toujours de lui comme le batteur de NIRVANA, ces talents de songwriters étant somme toute assez douteux !
Mais passons, le sujet n’est pas là. Les Belges de DEATH BEFORE DISCO se présentent sur ce second opus comme un groupe assoiffé de mélanges en tout genres allant de l’Emocore (évidemment !), au Hardcore et aux touches Metal (s’ils le disent, on va leur faire la politesse de leur accorder !), des teintes Popisantes, de Rock etc… Pour résumé, une musique ornée de Rock alternatif saturé résolument moderne intégrant des plans Jazzy et pétulante d’énergie et de vitalité. Sauf qu’ici, le résultat n’est pas à la hauteur de la présentation voulue et donnée. On a droit plutôt à une méga salade composée aux ingrédients souvent indigestes et périmés.
N’ayant pas complètement renié leur passé de groupe de Hardcore, les Belges, dotés d’une technique irréprochable et d’un son soigné ne parviennent pourtant pas à hausser leur niveau et à proposer un jeu plus compacte, plus homogène. Des dix titres on ne se souviendra pas de grand chose, rien n’est marquant. L’ensemble est certes panaché, mais une écoute suivie finira par perdre l’auditeur dans des structures souvent trop confuses et trop en rupture. Le chant clair mélodique proposé par Ioan se veut émotionnel mais manque justement de cette émotion et fini par être accablant et ennuyeux.
S’ils vont au delà des barrières musicales, le groupe se perd dans ses expérimentations fragiles et s’embourbent dans une sacrée panade. Trop d’éclectisme tue l’éclectisme. Si cet opus devrait ravir les amateurs de ce sous-genre en poupe, le trop grand éventail de styles risquerait d’en déstabiliser et désorienter plus d’un.
