Comme dans tous les styles, il y a dans le Metal Progressif du bon comme du moins bon. Et puis il y a des groupes qui naviguent entre ces deux eaux. OUTWORLD fait partie de ceux-là, et je m’en explique.
Musicalement, c’est bon. C’est même très bon. On oscille entre des passages progressifs qu’on pourrait qualifier de classiques (des plans déjà vus, des enchaînements que l’on pressent avant de les entendre…) avec de l’originalité et même parfois de l’audace dans certains plans (j’ai l’impression que Rusty Cooley, le guitariste, s’est fait plaisir sur les dissonances maîtrisées de « Prelude To Madness »). Même le son du clavier de Bobby Williamson sait changer pour le bien de la musique et ne pas rester sur ce son si caractéristique de ce genre de formations. N’allons pas parler de samples, mais l’effet pourrait presque être le même sur certains passages. Les morceaux s’enchaînent à merveille et nous propose des ambiances assez différentes. Prenons, par exemple, « Riders » qui n’est pas sans rappeler ANGRA par moment et HELLOWEEN par d’autres. D’ailleurs, le chant de Kelly Carpenter est digne des plus grands de la scène Heavy, ce qui renforce cette impression. Mais des morceaux comme « City Of The Dead » sait se faire progressif dans son ensemble, proposant des plans en veux-tu en voilà, dans une cohérence toujours parfaite, qui en montre techniquement, mais sait se faire plus sobre pour le bien du morceau. Et la batterie dans tout ça ? Elle serait à mi-chemin entre celle de DREAM THEATER et SYMPHONY X. Pas toujours linéaire dans la double grosse caisse, mais pas au point de soutenir les rythmiques syncopées du début à la fin.
Mais alors, pourquoi ce disque ne peut-il approcher la perfection ? Tout simplement parce que la voix de Kelly Carpenter gâche tout. Elle manque de maturité pour ce genre de composition et fait se crisper là où le plaisir et la plénitude auraient dus arriver à l’écoute. C’est frustrant. Il fait un peu penser au premier chanteur de DREAM THEATER, Charlie Dominici, qui sur une musique pourtant géniale arrivait à lasser l’auditeur au bout de deux morceaux. Avec Kelly Carpenter, c’est pareil. Il faut s’accrocher pour résister à la tentation d’arrêter l’écoute tellement sa voix trop aigue stresse l’oreille. Sans parler des fois où il a du mal à monter aussi haut qu’il le souhaiterait. Espérons que l’arrivée de Carlos Zema pour le remplacer saura donner une autre dimension au chant de ce groupe qui mériterait les éloges sans cette ombre, malgré tout imposante.
Les fans de Metal Progressif sauront quand même y trouver leur compte, les passages musicaux étant vraiment grandioses.
