Lorsque j’entends parler de Death metal mélodique, j’ai comme une réaction épidermique. C’est un non sens. Le Death Metal, par définition, ne peut être mélodique. Pour quelqu’un qui un jour, au détour d’un bac poussiéreux chez son disquaire fétiche, est tombé sur un album à la pochette bizarre intitulé Scream Bloody Gore, rajouter des phrasés mélodique à une musique qui se doit d’être extrême, c’est comme ajouter de la crème fraîche dans du tabasco. Du jus d’orange dans un verre de vodka gelé. Certes, cela reste parfaitement digeste, mais il manque la sensation de base, celle dite de la « gorge en feu ». Ca dégage certes, mais pas assez pour implorer le pardon de son estomac pour cette torture infligée volontairement. NOUMENA, c’est du Death certes, mais uniquement parce que c’est marqué sur l’étiquette. Caractéristique de leurs trois albums précédents. Sont roublards les Finlandais. J’appellerais plus volontiers ça du gros Heavy, avec un bon brailleur grave derrière le micro. Jack Nicholson à la fin de Shining. Kane Roberts dans Shocker. Mais le tout est de savoir distiller le discours rageur tout au long d’un album longue durée. Sans lasser. Sans se répéter. Sans avoir recours au même gimmick. Ici, c’est le cas.
La musique de cet album n’est pas critiquable en soi. C’est bien fait. C’est carré. Mais c’est tout. Alors on essaie de noyer le poisson, d’intros folk à voix féminines en licks de guitares directement empruntes au Heavy 80’s, de rythmes bancals en accélérations rock, tout est fait pour repeindre la carrosserie nickel pour oublier que dessous, c’est de la tôle bon marché. Mais on n’est pas dupes. Une Fiat Uno, ça reste une Fiat Uno, même avec des bas de caisse chromés, ou un ampli 500 watts dans le coffre. On est loin de la Testarossa du genre. Restent quand même de belles pièces sur la caisse, « The Burning » et son intro ou les guitares et la batterie serpentent de concert, « Marionettes » et son beat accrocheur comme un bon 180 km/h sur l’autoroute, ou « Triumph And Loss », qui ressemble à un cross sur un terrain de l’armée désaffecté. Mais voila, le reste, ça donne plutôt envie de faire du stop. De tendre le pouce accompagné d’une jolie poule en short moulant genre Daisy Duke, histoire de monter dans une BMW brillante pour bouffer de l’asphalte à en crever. De se repasser des vieux CREMATORY ou un bon ARCH ENEMY, qui conviennent beaucoup mieux à une conduite sportive sans respecter les limitations. L’hiver sera rude. Les bagnoles de luxe se font rares sur cette route. Vais reprendre mon VTT moi. Moins lourd, plus rapide, pas cher. J’aime pas le goudron, ça reste collé sous les baskets l’été…
