Après neuf années d’une destinée placée sous le signe de la psychiatrie carabinée avec en ligne de mire l’accouchement de quatre de leurs albums chez Adipocère Records, les stéphanois de BENIGHTED sont enchantés de vous dévoiler en avant première le petit dernier nommé Icon né de la nouvelle relation entre BENIGHTED et leur nouvelle compagne Osmose Productions. Officialisée récemment, cette nouvelle union marque un tournant pour le groupe qui réalise ainsi sa nouvelle pièce de Brutal Death extrême construite comme un concept album. Pour en dire plus, on assiste à la lente déchéance et à la chute dans la psychose d’un homme dont les fêlures sont révélées à travers ces douze morceaux sous forme de flashbacks sur sa propre existence. Les sphères des pathologies psychiatriques n’ont pas de secret pour le combo étant donné que leur beugleur patenté vaque à ses occupations dans un hôpital psychiatrique. C’est dire que BENIGHTED sait et maîtrise on ne peut mieux la matière. Pour entrer dans le vif du sujet, on peut dire que ce Icon est plus Thrash dans les attaques de riffs que son prédécesseur et excellent Identisick.
Solides de leurs dix ans de carrière, les expérimentés hommes du Forez nous affligent de leur Death Grind groovy, ultra technique à l’intensité toujours aussi alerte et vivace. Leur marque de fabrique étant l’originalité associée à l’efficacité, BENIGHTED nous lâche ces riffs brutaux Thrashy sur fond de blastbeats frénétiques. Le chant varié et reconnaissable de Julien fait de plus des merveilles comme d’habitude sur les prestations des stéphanois. Si l’opus est varié, aéré, riche et bien ciselé, les titres demeurent cependant moins marquants et fédérateurs que sur les précédents albums. Créatifs, les morceaux des plongés dans l’ignorance ont de cela qu’ils sont très identifiables. Pourtant, quelque chose ne fonctionne pas vraiment sur ce cinquième opus car les morceaux sont dans l’ensemble décevants et on éprouve du mal à y adhérer, selon mon sentiment. Quelques fautes de goût éparse comme sur «Grind Wit» et ce break Hip Hop incongru n’ayant pas grand chose à faire là et surtout n’apportant rien à la chanson ou des cassures rythmiques trop tangibles rendant des morceaux étonnants plus communs tels que sur «Slut».
Bien évidemment on retrouvera notre lot de titres percutants avec «Saw It All» et «Icon». Malheureusement, on ne ressent pas de réels progrès sur cet opus. Moins bon que I.C.P. et Identisick, Icon reste un album bien foutu mais eu égard à la discographie complète et ahurissante du quintet, on reste sur une note amère car BENIGHTED nous avait habitué à bien mieux. Profitant d’une bonne production, enregistré au Kohlekekker studio en Allemagne, l’ensemble reste catchy, puissant et d’un niveau tout à fait respectable et satisfaisant. Gageons qu’avec Osmose, les portes de la reconnaissance s’ouvrent plus vite que prévues pour ce groupe talentueux mais pas assez mis en avant. Une nouvelle ampleur pourrait les gagner et serait toute bénéfique pour l’un des groupe français les plus doués de sa génération.
