Dans la mythologie nordique, il est dit que Tyr est le plus ancien des Ases, une des grandes divinités souveraine des cieux, notamment connu pour s’être sacrifié en acceptant de mettre sa dextre dans la gueule du loup Fenrir en signe de bonne foi. Un être altruiste sans aucun doute. C’est peut être bien pour cela que TYR, le groupe, est si généreux avec ses ouailles. Après leurs précédents albums Erik The Red (2003) et Ragnarok (2006), les féroïens de TYR font effectivement office de stakhanoviste du Folk Viking Metal à tendance folklorique féringienne. Contre vents et marées, TYR se bat encore et toujours contre la disparition des croyances féroïennes et pour que perdure leur folklore multi séculaire. Ils militent également pour l’indépendance de leur chère amas d’îles plus peuplées de moutons que d’hommes.
Ne s’écartant pas de leur leitmotiv habituel et poussant encore plus loin les limites de leur penchant naturel pour la thématique scandinave, les textes abordent toute sorte d’histoires traditionnelles et d’autres sagas du panthéon nordique, donc rien de nouveau de ce côté là. Rehaussé d’un concept une nouvelle fois fort spécifique et soigné, comme toujours TYR mise tout sur la forme mais pas grand chose dans le fond… TYR c’est une belle vitrine de promotion pour la Scandinavie et ses croisières, une campagne de pub visuelle et textuelle pour les contrées du Nord… Le quatuor emmené par Heri Joensen s’impose quant à lui à déployer un chant clair bien mis en valeur. Déclamant ses textes en féroïen, norvégien, islandais, à vrai dire on ne voit pas trop la différence mais TYR est bien obligé de faire avec même si des incursions d’anglais font leur apparition à un degré moindre.
Leur Folk Viking héroïque influencé par le Metal scandinave n’en garde que peu de traces. Au contraire, ce sont leurs tendances progressistes qui sont le plus souvent mises en exergue car il s’agit d’une des marques de fabrique du son TYR associé à de bonnes choses montrées avec les guitares. Quelques radiations de soleil pointent le bout de leurs rayons avec des titres vraiment plaisants comme le lent et majestueux début de «Gandkvaedi Trondar» ou la très languissante «Gatu Rima». On citera également le morceau «Sinklars Visa» offrant de savoureux chœurs. Revers de la médaille, TYR est encore capable de proposer des titres insipides et trop longs comme par exemple les supplices du pilori que sont «Ocean» ou le morceau éponyme. Heureusement, la production limpide et cristalline rend la pilule plus digeste car dix titres pour presque 70 minutes de Folk Viking…faut s’accrocher.
Nonobstant, au final, on s’ennuie ferme sur le drakkar de TYR…Il ne s’y passe pas grand chose. Une petite tempête, une légère bourrasque ou même un petit souffle venteux venu du cercle polaire n’aurait été que bénéfique pour apporter de l’air frais à des compositions parfois un peu trop gauches et empêtrées. Néanmoins, il s’agit là du meilleur groupe des iles Féroé car…le seul.
