Pas si simple de jauger les capacités d’un groupe totalement méconnu comme DEEPLY CONFUSED. Moi aussi je suis profondément confus mais surtout profondément désarmé devant une performance aussi déconcertante qu’Isolated. Ce premier EP autoproduit intervient pas tout à fait deux ans après une première démo qui n’a visiblement pas eu l’effet escompté puisque la formation à été contrainte d’autoproduire cet effort. Sur une carte du monde, on situerait DEEPLY CONFUSED du côté de Montréal au Canada. Dans un pays qui s’affranchit de jour en jour dans le domaine de la musique extrême, nos amis francophones ne me laissent pas insensible. En effet, depuis l’éclosion de mes chouchous de DESPISED ICON, j’essaie de suivre tant bien que mal son évolution. Voilà sans doute une des raisons qui m’a poussée à sélectionner ce palet.
Le démarrage est poussif, les canadiens introduisent Isolated avec une instrumentale à mi-chemin entre le générique de Lost et celui de Koh-Lanta. Tout en percussion, ils insufflent tant bien que mal une sorte d’ambiance tribale et hostile. L’hostilité, on la retrouve sur « Torments In The Shade Of The Totem Pole ». Incisive et sanguine, cette piste fais dans un Death très technique où le contraste entre guitare lead et rythmique ravivera sans difficulté la flamme du swedish Death moderne. « The Thirtieth Thorn » évolue exactement dans le même milieu avec une dominance Thrash plus marquée. On ne peut pas s’empêcher de remarquer que DEEPLY CONFUSED pratique un Metal certes limpide, mais sans réelle spécificité. Il faudra attendre « Stuck In The Traffic With Kip Winger » pour entendre une vraie innovation. La basse s’illustre de manière très convaincante dans un morceau à la rythmique entraînante et au leitmotiv inspiré, tout en finesse et sorti des profondeurs d’un clavier. Milieu de la plage, un break marqué par un solo appréciable et voilà que DEEPLY CONFUSED commence à devenir carrément intéressant. Adhérer à leurs compositions n’est pas encore dans mon programme mais ces canadiens ont le sang chaud et un état d’esprit remarquable. Les vocaux manquent un poil de singularité ; « on fait du Death donc c’est des growls et pourquoi pas deux ou trois petits braillements éraillés ». La formule, on la connaît tous. Il n’est pas pour autant interdit d’apporter une note de fraicheur avec, pourquoi pas, une présence vocale plus claire. A l’instar, justement, de cette facette « semi-symphonique » sur « Stuck In The Traffic With Kip Winger » par exemple. Et puis, comment ne pas finir cette chronique avec la prestation tout bonnement rarissime de la batteuse Gabrielle Morin ? A côté d’elle, Joey Jordison peut désormais utiliser ses baguettes pour manger des sushis. Sa prestation est à la hauteur des prétentions de DEEPLY CONFUSED, elle assume son statut avec brio et talent.
Cependant, ce combo demeure une sérieuse énigme que je m’efforcerais de résoudre. Pour ça, il faudra attendre la suite qui confirmera ou infirmera tout ce que je pense d’eux. Le problème, c’est que je ne sais pas trop quoi en penser, et j’en suis bien sûr… profondément confus.
