La première fois que j’ai pris des renseignements à propos de MISERY SPEAKS, je me suis dis que sur le papier, c’allait être un groupe pour moi. Allemands, la vingtaine tout juste dépassée, des airs d’ados rebelles négligés et des décibels de « Deathcore » mélodique à distribuer sans compter, ces quelques qualificatifs avaient tout pour faire de ce combo germanique mon coup de cœur du moment. Il ne fallait pas tirer de plans sur la comète. Halley passe bien loin de mon nirvana. En dépit d’une fréquentation assidue des planches et des festivals européens, l’inspiration de MISERY SPEAKS à toutes les peines du monde à décoller. « Pas mauvais mais pas super imaginatif », tels ont été les attributs de Catalogue Of Carnage. « Toujours pas mauvais mais toujours pas super imaginatif », tels seront ceux de Disciples Of Doom. Et même s’ils en sont les disciples, les portes de leur destin restent inviolées malgré quelques tentatives de forçage.
On ne pleurera jamais sur leur technique, totalement irréprochable. La production dirigée par Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY, SONIC SYNDICATE, THE ABSENCE) est limpide comme les eaux d’un ruisseau de haute-montagne, elle ne souffre d’aucun accroc majeur (si ce n’est la batterie un peu trop mise en avant, surtout quand Janosch décide de chatouiller ses cymbales). Contrairement aux squelettes des chansons qui s’emberlificotent souvent dans des stéréotypes navrants. Porter un jugement de valeur là-dessus est, contrairement à l’opinion générale, assez difficile. Car à chaque fois que j’ai eu envie d’écrire que ce Deathcore sentait le réchauffé, arrivait toujours un solo ou une décélération fort bien emballée qui m’enlevait les mots du clavier. Bizarrement, si je voue une passion pour les compositions de courte durée, d’habitude concise et d’une jouissance absolue, ici ce sont les plus longues qui passent le mieux. « End Up In Smoke » ou « Obsessed » ne présentent que peu d’intérêt, contrairement à « A Road Less Travelled », « Disciple Of Doom » et son motif d’une lourdeur doomesque (six minutes chacunes) et « Black Garden » qui atteint la bagatelle de huit minutes, toutes intenses à des degrés différents. Dieu soit loué, les munichois n’ont pas oublié de souffler de la vie dans les bronches de leurs compos. Ainsi, distinguer chaque piste de sa voisine et identifier distinctement les refrains ne sera pas un travail de titan. Tout comme la présence de quelques mélodies laissera entrevoir quelques capacités au final pas si hérétiques. Le point d’interrogation principal concerne l’impact vraiment mineur de certaines complaintes qui jouent dans l’ombre de « Disciples Of Doom » ou « Into The Unknown ». Avait-on vraiment besoin de « The Swarm » ou « Obsessed » ? Car ces deux plages (pour ne citer qu’elles), en dépit d’une évidente aisance dans leur conception ne font que rallonger la tracklist de deux unités sans rien apporter en retour sur les enseignements qu’on pourra tirer de Disciples Of Doom.
Ah non ! On remarquera tout de même que ceux qui étaient promis à devenir les fers de lance d’une scène en vogue préfèrent visiblement la stagnation à l’évolution. Egalement qu’on ne passe pas un si mauvais moment que ça. Mais fèces, avec moins de vergogne, il aurait pu carrément être bon ! Par la force des choses, MISERY SPEAKS se range dans la catégorie de groupes dont on n’attendra hélas, plus grand-chose…
