Retenez bien le nom de PURSE SNATCHER parce que vous risquez d’en entendre parler régulièrement ces prochaines années. Ce groupe de Cleveland, dans l’Ohio, arrive avec un EP six titres qui brillera en lettres d’or sur leur carte de visite. Six titres, c’est peu. Et même si le groupe navigue dans un registre de musique structurellement complexe, il ne s’est pas laissé embarquer dans des digressions trop nombreuses. Du coup les morceaux ne durent pas et on a une galette de seulement dix huit minutes. Eh oui, seulement, parce qu’on serait bien resté en compagnie des compères plus longtemps tellement leur musique se fait un chemin jusque dans les tripes.
Narrated By commence par « Empty Vials », un morceau très typé Metal, avec un son abrupt et des rythmiques que l’on ne retrouve pas habituellement dans le Rock. Pourtant, on ne se déplace pas jusque dans l’agressivité du Metal. Les virages sont moins raides et PURSE SNATCHER nous guide pour les prendre. On parle de rythmique, mais il ne faut pas oublier la mélodie, parce que les morceaux n’en sont pas dépourvus. La preuve, « Something That Crush » et son riff qui, s’il peut paraître d’une étonnante facilité, s’infiltre dans nos crânes pour ne plus en sortir. Les variations autour du même thème que le groupe décide de tester sont bonnes et toujours de bon goût. « Purse Snatcher » fait partie des morceaux plus puissants, plus métalliques, comme l’intro schizophrénique de « Semi-Truckin Your Face », alors que « Battle Of The Wildcat » se veut plus posé, voire calme.
Je n’ai pas parlé d’un détail important en ce qui concerne PURSE SNATCHER : il n’y a pas de chant. On se concentre uniquement sur les histoires qu’une simple musique est capable de diffuser. Quelles histoires ? C’est à vous de les faire. Mais chacun prendra plaisir à se repasser les morceaux afin de les peaufiner.
