Depuis la nuit des temps, il est établi que l’Homme est en permanente recherche du nirvana spirituel et qu’il n’a de cesse de se rattacher à des mythes et légendes, parfois farfelues, qui rythment et orchestrent sa vie. Dieu, Allah, Odin, Zeus ou Poséidon, vous les connaissez tous. On ne sait pas vraiment encore qui existe et qui n’existe pas, mais seules leurs aventures suffisent à inspirer certaines de nos formations favorites. C’est le cas de SUIDAKRA. Les allemands qui sillonnent les routes depuis 1994 et qui, pour la neuvième fois, nous proposent un album studio n’ont jamais dissimulé puiser dans la source de la mythologie celtique pour noircir leurs partitions. Ce principe de fonctionnement leur permet donc d’avoir une identité forte et une certaine singularité en dépit d’un génie artistique.
La loi de l’œuvre du temps est bien cruelle mais force est de constater que SUIDAKRA est plus proche de la fin de sa carrière que de son commencement. Cela s’entend dès l’introduction, « Slan ». Les quelques notes de harpe et de cornemuse ne sont pas géniales mais restent dans la veine de leur sujet principal. Tout comme « Conloach » qui ne fait pas preuve d’une saveur exceptionnelle en tant que premier morceau du gâteau. Les teutons font parler l’expérience et le refrain à l’écossaise n’a rien de bien surprenant. Pareil en ce qui concerne « Isle Of Skye » qui suit un schéma assez classique, avec un riff mélodique et un interlude composé des chœurs virils et un tambourin pas très efficace car très conventionnel. C’est d’ailleurs surprenant d’entendre SUIDAKRA manquer autant son départ, eux qui nous avaient habitués à des entrées en fanfare sur Signs For The Fallen ou Caledonia. Mais que serait le monde sans les femmes ? Un paradis pour certain, un enfer pour moi et surtout pour les teutons, qui voient leur salut passer par l’arrivée de Tina Stabel sur « Feats Of War » et de Miriam Hensel sur « Shattering Swords ». Ces deux pièces consécutives sont un petit moment de bonheur. Car à part ça, on découvre un combo fort décevant et en panne sèche. La batterie, qui ferait mieux de marteler comme des tambours au coin d’un cromlech en Irlande profonde est massive comme sur un disque de Grind. Le chant d’Arkadius n’est pas non plus le plus marquant et n’a plus le même impact qu’auparavant. Alors, bien sur, si les morceaux sont agréables et combleront sans doute ceux qui s’aèrent encore l’entrejambe avec un kilt ou ceux qui se réchauffent avec des peaux de bêtes, les autres qui ne sont pas fans des liturgies exotiques passeront un moment bien long. Et définitivement, ce sont les invités de cet opus qui le sauvent. Merci donc au Luisen Vocalensemble de Berlin pour ses chœurs sur « Baile’s Strand » mais aussi aux trois musiciens pour cette idée qui oxygène leur production.
Chroniqueur, c’est pas marrant tous les jours. Pourtant, ce genre musical dynamique et vivant est censé donner le sourire. Hier encore, je me tournais vers SUIDAKRA pour chercher l’étincelle celtique qui me donnait envie de danser. Aujourd’hui, c’est du coté de la Suisse et d’ELUVEITIE qu’il faut s’orienter. Le maitre serait-il passé en dessous de l’élève ?
