Artwork chaleureux et coloré, dégaines pétillantes et brillantinées ou encore Ferret Records sont tants de motifs qui m’avaient laissé croire que cet album éponyme des BOYS NIGHT OUT serait une « boucherie-core » sans nom, savoureuse et pimentée dont je me gave à grosses pelletées. Eh non, le rose n’est pas une couleur exclusivement réservée aux Deathcoreux, ça va très bien également avec le Punk/Rock ! Comme nous le prouve cette bande canadienne qui sort avec Boys Night Out en 2007 son troisième et dernier album en date. Et c’est pour ainsi dire dommage ! Car les intentions présentes sur cet opus sont excellentes et auraient méritées d’être davantage exploitées.
Donc, comme annoncé, je m’attendais à quelque chose de plus… bourrin ! Dans le genre « sortez les breakdowns, aiguisez vos blasts, vocalisez haut-perché et en avant la musique ! ». Que nenni ! « Get Your Head Straight » est une introduction follement divertissante, pas violente pour un copeck mais tellement rafraîchissante. Qu’on soit clair : c’est du Punk/Rock et ça ressemble beaucoup aux canons du style : SUM 41, BLINK 182, GREEN DAY, SIMPLE PLAN, GOOD CHARLOTTE, j’en oublie sans doute. Par conséquent, que ceux qui font des réactions cutanées bizarres à ce style respectent la distance réglementaire sous peine d’urticaire, psoriasis, eczéma, zona et j’en oublie encore. Personnellement, je n’ai aucune crainte injustifiée et toutes celles qui le sont n’ont plus lieu d’être. Car soyons objectifs : BOYS NIGHT OUT s’en sort extrêmement bien dans un répertoire où les groupes pullulent abondement. Les mélodies sont agréables, entêtantes et basculent parfois vers la Pop (« Let Me Be Your Swear Word »). Quand la batterie effectue des tours de chauffe, c’est la guitare qui monte au premier plan dans des notes proches du mouvement Progressif ou qui effectue l’une ou l’autre envolée bien pensée (« Hey, Thanks ! »). Elle s’illustre également sur « Fall For The Drinker » dans l’exercice de la ballade aérodynamique. Avec succès. La voix est typique du Punk, audible et pincée bien qu’un peu trop souvent accompagnée de chœurs selon moi. Je sais que ce critère artistique est très apprécié (notamment chez SUM 41) mais ici, les décalages sont parfois trop important entre la principale et la secondaire pour faire mouche (« Apartment 41 »). A noter également un gros passage à vide entre « Get Your Head Straight » et « The Heirs Of Error » où il ne se passe strictement rien en trois pistes. Heureusement que ces dernières ne sont pas trop longues sinon j’aurais pu frôler l’apoplexie. La clôture sera posée par « It Won’t Be Long » qui, contrairement à ce que son nom indique, est la proposition la plus importante dans l’espace-temps et de loin l’une des meilleures. On démarre avec des arpèges posés, du piano et une voix mielleuse façon Rock/Lounge qu’on écoute dans un boui-boui désert en dégustant menthe à l’eau et cacahuètes et on termine énergiquement dans des couplets post-Hardcore / chanson à boire psychédéliques. Un chaud/froid contrastant et fort bien pensé.
Alors que l’offrande se termine doucement, on arriverait presque à en redemander. Sans révolutionner les classiques du genre, Boys Night Out s’impose presque naturellement comme le défibrillateur qui vous ramènera à la vie si, comme moi, vous êtes mort de rire à chaque fois que vous écoutez GOOD CHARLOTTE.
