Disons-le, nous recevons, comme beaucoup de webzines, un nombre important de démos auto-produites de France et de navarre. Et en tant que chroniqueur, il est toujours difficile d'aborder ces productions, à la qualité très variable et au nom souvent inconnu. Ce qui m'a attiré chez SARACENS, ce sont tout d'abord leurs origines tunisiennes. Parce que le Metal est avant tout une affaire d'européens et d'américains, et qu'il est d'autant plus rare de voir des groupes émerger du monde arabe. Pourtant il y en a, et quand ils jouent le jeu d'affirmer l'identité de leur pays dans leur musique, le résultat est souvent admirable (écoutez donc les albums de MELECHECH si vous n'en êtes pas convaincus!).
C'est donc avec une grande joie mêlée de crainte que j'aborde cet opus. L'artwork me laisse penser que le groupe ne renie pas ses origines. Et en effet, je ne suis pas déçu! « The Onset » introduit l'album avec une ambiance orientale puissante (digne de Communion de SEPTICFLESH). Yassine (guitariste, compositeur et leader) a du talent c'est certain. L'orchestration est bien menée, puissante et aérée tout à la fois. Vient ensuite, « Means's Conquest » ou l'on découvre les voix arabisantes de Nour et Wafa...
Elles sont les bienvenues pour apporter de la lumière à ces compositions plutôt sombres, mais leur mixage est tout à fait bizarre. Les voix sont très en avant, mais pourtant sonnent étouffées! Yassine quand à lui s'occupe des grunts, qui ne ressemblent guère plus qu'à de vagues bruits de fond. Le principal problème de cette démo est la production vraiment médiocre, qui ne rend pas compte du plein potentiel du groupe. La guitare est assez faiblarde, seules les cymbales et les orchestrations s'en sortent avec les honneurs.
« Allowed Blackmail » est encore un petit chef d'œuvre, très bien orchestré, vivant, et emprunt de poésie. Il y a un vrai travail sur les ambiances, mais aussi sur les parties plus black qui sortent de l'ordinaire par les composantes orientales omniprésentes. La démo se clôture (déjà!) par « Kneeling Head » qui confirme la forte identité du groupe : un Metal entre Black et Symphonique, parsemé d'influences orientales et de choeurs arabisants. Je dirais que c'est dans la veine de Communion, moins sophistiqué mais plus authentique.
L'écoute de ce Hegemonic Plots m'a fait voyager dans des contrées lointaines, à mille lieux des standards du Metal qu'on peut trouver en Europe et en Amérique du Nord. C'est un vrai vent frais qui souffle sur le Metal qui a tendance à voir des réalisations toujours identiques. Le seul gros point faible de cette démo est la production, qui fait parfois souffrir nos oreilles. Mais attendons de voir le premier album du groupe. Si n'importe qui peut se monter son home studio en France, il n'en va pas de même ailleurs. J'espère sincèrement que SARACENS va déployer ses ailes et nous en mettre plein la vue!
