C’est en allant voir un chirurgien-plasticien pour lui demander de me faire des injections d’acide hyaluronique dans les fesses que j’ai réalisé que j’avais fait une overdose de Metal brésilien. Huit albums en treize jours, un ratio honorable, je reconnais que l’inspiration commençait à manquer et que les clichés pourris sur le foot, la samba et Roberta de Trans-brésil.com venaient à point nommé pour relancer la machine. Après celui-là, on arrête, c’est promis ! Au tour de KHROPHUS donc. Ce trio fort amical nous vient de la ville côtière de São José et, tenez vous bien, officie dans le milieu depuis 1993, ce qui à titre indicatif, est aussi l’année de formation de RAMMSTEIN. Plus prolixes depuis le passage à l’an 2000 avec un album et un EP contre deux démos auparavant, les gars n’y vont pas de main morte pour nous proposer un second album, sobrement illustré et intitulé Presages.
Avec un minimum de lucidité, on devine facilement vers quel registre se dirige KHROPHUS. Et on ne s’y trompe pas. Tout ce sang qui est versé dans le booklet ne peut qu’être l’aveu maladroit d’un penchant pour le Brutal Death… D’emblée, les brésiliens se montrent très prévisibles et mettent les deux pieds dans le plat. De l’hémoglobine, des crânes et des t-shirts OBITUARY, on trouve aujourd’hui des clichés plus subtils. Mais ce qui est bien avec KHROPHUS, c’est que cette imagerie grossière colle parfaitement avec leur musique, pas vraiment plus raffinée. « Dominated », « Symbols Or Not ? », « Statues », autant de créations concises, bruyantes, exécutées dans une ambiance renfermée et ammoniacale. Dans le fond, nos latinos se rapprochent d’un SEVERE TORTURE et dans la forme, d’un AVULSED. Avec un seul guitariste, qui fait preuve de beaucoup de dextérité même si les solos, c’est pas son truc (« Fisher Of Souls »), KHROPHUS démontre qu’on n’a pas besoin d’avoir deux branleurs de manches dans ses rangs si un seul est capable de gérer correctement le poste. Les bpm défilent à vitesse grand V sans qu’on puisse vraiment les compter. Avec en plus, des morceaux qui tablent tous entre 5 et 6 minutes, une sensation de confusion point vite le bout du nez. La faute à Carlos Fernandes, un batteur à la vélocité remarquable mais au jeu linéaire. La qualité sonore n’est pas extra non plus, malgré un enregistrement studio et un mixage maison. Et qu’on ne me dise pas qu’il y’avait une volonté de faire un disque old-school, parce que ce Brutal Death est des plus contemporains et des plus actuels, comme l’en atteste la prestation vocale d’Alex Pazetto. Débiter des couplets en commençant par un growl caverneux et en finissant par des screams suraigus, c’est pas vraiment une technique vieille comme le monde… Je n’en suis d’ailleurs pas très fan, je préfère quand les artistes se décident plutôt que de balancer entre l’un et l’autre. Ceci étant, les growls sont d’excellente facture. L’impression générale, assez bonne, se renforce avec une proposition comme « Slaves Of Hunger » qui démarre avec des notes de guitares planantes et qui vomit sa haine dans les secondes qui suivent, avec un riffing véritablement technique et des brisures rythmiques, domptées par une basse ronronnante.
En tout cas, avec ce second opus, KHROPHUS reste droit dans ses bottes et fidèle à ses convictions. Ce Brutal Death n’est pas impeccable et se retrouve moucheté de petites imperfections qui demanderont la prochaine fois un travail de relecture approfondi. Mais dans sa globalité, cette prestation demeure honnête et fait un clin d’œil aguicheur aux références du style. A vous de voir si vous aimez découper de la chair fraîche avec les seconds couteaux.
