On connaissait le Black’N’Roll, là où certains s’amusaient à dire et à croire que les Blackeux étaient devenus des tafioles tant leur son s’apparentait au Rock festif plutôt qu’aux innombrables incantations démoniaques. Soit le genre est passé comme une lettre à la poste ne dénaturant que très peu au final l’emblématique méchant métalleux issu du Black. Très peu, mais un peu quand même. Et oui, il va sans dire qu’associer l’icône du mal, du sombre ainsi que ses résonances cradingues et lourdes à un instant un tant soit peu joyeux était osé. Malgré tout, force est de constater que certains mariages, même les plus improbables, enfantent des structures plus qu’intéressantes. Si bien qu’au final nombreuses ont été les formations à reprendre la recette en copiant leur petits copains d’école.
A présent, on joue à celui qui va nous dégoter le concept le plus barré de l’histoire du Black, du Death et j’en passe pour nous servir de la variété métallique au déjeuner.
THE AMENTA qui n’est plus novice en la matière nous dévoile donc pour la énième fois (sixième pour être plus précise) après trois E.P et deux albums Chokehold, ultime opus sortit tout droit de … l’entre-cuisse d’un hybride du Roi Lion et Robocop. Si la liste des téméraires en matière de combo déjanté est assez dense THE AMENTA persiste et signe dans les frasques et s’entête à nous faire partager son goût pour l’étrangeté.
Chokehold ne faillira donc pas à la règle en dégageant une fois n’est pas coutume des accents extrêmement Industriel sur fond de pseudo Black/Death arrangé à la sauce kangourou.
Sauter, aucun doute vous allez y parvenir mais sans jamais décoller. Alors même si parfois le style est ingénieux et nous fait flirter avec des atmosphères assez planantes, on peine à se dégager de ce côté trop électro mis en avant à défauts du « bad true » recherché à la vue de la pochette. Seul des étapes de la trempe de « Erebus » vont se faire remarquer pour leur tranchant syncopé. La torture trouvera également sa place puisque sur certaines épreuves nous pourrons assister (impuissant) au cisaillement de cordes vocales à l’aide d’un scalpel mal aiguisé ; c’est dire si cela doit être douloureux. En effet, la perception du geste chirurgical sur l’organe de Cessium 137 (chant) est nette - enfin je dirais Gore - sur « Ache » par exemple. Leur musique aussi travaillée soit-elle mettra essentiellement en avant les yeux révulsés de la cover de l’album soit le travers perturbé de la personnalité de nos Australiens ce qui pourrait mettre en péril la crédibilité de leur composition. C’est quand même bien dommage quand on constate des ébauches plus techniques (« Spine ») de devoir se contenter majoritairement de composition aliénée dérangeantes. Toutefois, même s’il n’est pas des plus agressifs, le disque aura la bonne idée d’amener sur le devant de la scène un mixage dégueulasse comme le veut la coutume de l’extrême en prenant soin tout de même d’enrober l’ensemble d’une texture virtuelle et synthétique.
Trop peu ou pas assez, tout ceci est bien mitigé ! Alors même si l’important c’est de participer ; de grâce persévérez.
