Au premier regard, je trouvais le visuel de Graphite affreusement cheap. Mais ce n'était pas bien grave, puisqu'à l'intérieur du booklet était photographiée sous différents angles la belle Anja Orthodoxe, une beauté vampirique qui fait machinalement affluer le sang dans n'importe quel organe mâle, au point d'en bosseler des braguettes. Un petit tour sur Google et une non-branlette plus loin, c'est le drame. Le visage bouffi, le regard vitreux, les joues rebondies, subtil croisement entre Gargamel, Pete Doherty et Béatrice Dalle, Anja a visiblement mal supporté le poids des années, et avec elle, CLOSTERKELLER, son groupe de toujours. Fondé en 1988 à Varsovie, le groupe se fait d'abord connaître la nuit avant de jeter une froide lumière sur ce monde mêlant New Wave, gothisme et romantisme. La Pologne connaît alors CLOSTERKELLER depuis bien longtemps, mais ce n'est qu'en 2003 que Metal Mind Records édite une version anglaise de Graphite, leur sixième album (et "meilleur" selon la presse), afin d'en faire profiter la partie la plus occidentale de l'Europe.
Génie ultime ou premiers frimas de la période ante-Twilight ? J'ai du mal à me décider. Car il semble évident qu'à moins d'être coupé du monde et de vivre reclus dans un bunker, une telle œuvre divisera, en premier lieu à cause de sa facilité technique, lyrique et mélodique. CLOSTERKELLER, en tout cas musicalement, n'est pas du genre à se casser le cul. Tout semble si simple que la personnalité artistique des Polonais se fait bêtement trahir après un "The Pearl" d'une platitude extrême, d'ailleurs plus Gothic Pop que Gothic Rock. On pourrait chipoter sur la justesse du timbre d'Anja ou sur l'implication des autres musiciens, transparents ou absents, c'est selon, mais on n'en a même pas envie, tant la musique servie indispose de sa naïveté romantico-idéaliste. Des compositions comme "The Secret Place", "Two Days", "The Reign Of The Comet" sont juste chiantes à mourir et je me demande de quel acabit doivent être Blue ou Violet si cet album leur est supérieur. Il ne se passe strictement rien, aucun rythme, aucune émotion, Graphite est anormalement lisse pour un groupe qui prétend évoluer dans la même catégorie que les LACRIMOSA, L'ÂME IMMORTELLE. Et encore, je n'ose évoquer UNHEILIG, THE CURE, THEATRE OF TRAGEDY, BAUHAUS, DAS ICH qui, eux aussi, ont une responsabilité quant à la parution de cette œuvre. Les rares moments plus nerveux comme "The Symbol Shatterer" ou "The Ego Game" et son petit côté "Hit That" des OFFSPRING passent davantage comme un divertissement parodique que comme une réhabilitation, et je vous assure que je n'ai pas inséré Graphite dans le lecteur avec un quelconque apriori. On peut s'appeler Metal-Impact et reconnaître le caractère parfaitement épuré, soft et équilibré de certains disques plus "abordables". Sauf que dans le cas présent, CLOSTERKELLER représente de manière définitivement trop grotesque tout ce qui énerve dans le Gothic Rock : avalanche de niaiseries, de balades blafardes et d'une prose à s'en tailler les veines, qui aurait d'ailleurs dû rester dans sa version originale polonaise, ça nous aurait épargné de la comprendre.
J'aurais préféré éviter de conclure, mais c'est une nécessité. Au-delà du fait que je considère Graphite comme un album de piètre qualité, une chose m'interpelle. Actif depuis maintenant un quart de siècle, géniteur de neuf albums, CLOSTERKELLER est quand même un groupe qui a su fédérer un engouement populaire, au moins dans son pays natal. Si ces Polonais étaient des marchands de tapis, ils auraient été lâchés par leur public depuis longtemps, non ? La passion est selon moi la seule explication possible à cette longévité, et c'est aussi la seule chose dont je sois vraiment convaincu à leur sujet, et qui force une forme de profond respect.
