Nous sommes donc en novembre 2013, les premières gelées s'abattent généreusement sur la moitié Nord du pays et les heures de colle promises aux écoliers indisciplinés sont bien entamées. Qu'elle est déjà loin, cette rentrée 2013 ! Et le pire dans tout ça, c'est qu'on ne voit pas vraiment arriver le premier album de MALKAVIAN, pourtant prévu pour le second semestre de l'année. Alors pour leur donner du courage, et accessoirement réparer un sérieux oubli, Metal-Impact a décidé de se (re)plonger dans l'histoire de November Ends, le premier EP de ce groupe nantais. D'ailleurs, le titre de cette œuvre est clairement une invitation à l'heure où les premiers sapins se dressent au cœur des places fortes de France. Un peu comme de réveiller Billie Joe de GREEN DAY fin septembre. Enfin ça, c'est une autre paire de manches.
Du "Power / Thrash". Il fallait oser. Ceci étant, n'interprétez pas cette étiquette au sens le plus littéral, car la réalité est beaucoup plus nuancée. Oui, MALKAVIAN possède la fibre Thrash Metal, celle qui sied particulièrement à certains groupes de la Bay Area, DEATH ANGEL en premier sur les riffs les plus furieux d'"Obedient". Mais il y a encore mieux. D'emblée et après une courte introduction ("Collapse"), les Nantais font étalage d'une palette technique assez hallucinante de variété. C'est à la fois moderne, organique et authentique, une association qui ne sera pas pour déplaire aux ardents défenseurs du Metal "made in France". Progressivement, les ambiances s'installent, le climat se dégrade et au travers de compositions comme "Keep Walking" ou "Brutalize", MALKAVIAN associe la brutalité primitive du Thrash / Death et la musicalité d'un chant plus étoffé et de lignes mélodiques brossées ("The Rotten Conspiracy"). Le chant, parlons-en ! Romaric dégage une profondeur vocale très appropriée et cloisonnante, ce qui donne une véritable âme à November Ends, une personnalité plus marquante encore que l'art du riffing saccadé ou du pattern de batterie épileptique. En reprenant plus ou moins les éléments technico-rythmiques qui font du Metal 2.0 une réussite, MALKAVIAN parvient surtout à ne pas tomber dans la caricature, en restant concentré, créatif et percutant du début à la fin. Selon les sensibilités, cet EP passionnera les foules, ou sera au moins d'une redoutable efficacité à défaut d'être inoubliable. Car il serait également démesuré de tomber si vite en amour d'un groupe qui n'a encore rien prouvé et qui, à mon goût, ne s'est pas vraiment mouillé en proposant un EP très accessible pour le quidam. Le fan de SLAYER y trouvera son compte, de même que celui de FEAR FACTORY, qui y dénichera un intérêt certain. Et Dieu sait combien ces groupes ont fait en leur temps l'unanimité...
Le potentiel est là, d'abord frémissant puis bouillonnant. L'exploiter encore mieux sera un défi de taille pour ces garçons qui se doivent désormais de concrétiser un premier album. Je rappelle que November Ends est sorti il y a maintenant plus de quatre ans et que c'était une charmante attention que de nous faire ainsi saliver, mais que les promesses appellent désormais les actes, tout comme le sang appelle le sang. Histoire d'être un peu plus qu'un meilleur espoir masculin.
