SALHEM était le bon voisin par excellence. Je dis ça parce que depuis le retrait de Bernie et des siens, nombreux sont ceux qui attendent le retour d'un groupe d'Heavy / Rock français capable de truster la place laissée vacante par TRUST. Ce quintet originaire de l'Ain n'avait pas non plus le profil idéal à la succession, mais fort de son premier et unique album, Connexion Animale, il réussit néanmoins à réveiller de vagues sentiments de révolte chez les vieux de la vieille. Et pour cause, SALHEM, en dépit de son terrible anonymat qui agit encore sept ans après la sortie de cet opus, a fait jouer une certaine expérience du style sur son œuvre. Déjà actif dans les années 80 sous le nom d'EUTHANASIE, le groupe se sépare en 1992 avant de se reformer en 2001 sous l'impulsion des historiques Titi Collet (chant), Bébert Bereyziat (basse), rejoints dans la foulée par Stéphane Terris (guitare) et deux petits nouveaux (Patrick Fargeot aux claviers, qui remplace numériquement la seconde guitare, et Thierry Chossat à la batterie).
SALHEM reprend alors son activité discographique avec une démo en 2003, mais tout l'intérêt de cette reformation consiste définitivement en ce full-lenght, qui n'est pas sans afficher une certaine authenticité sous la couche de poussière le protégeant des hivers rigoureux. Derrière le riff rammsteinien de "Connexion", l'identité animale des garçons jaillit, pas aidée par une production laborieuse, étouffée, ne mettant pas du tout en valeur les arguments du groupe. Les claviers apportent par ailleurs une touche gothique désagréable à l'ensemble, pas franchement représentative des compétences de SALHEM. Je préfère largement le feeling old-school d'"Au Nom De La Loi". Ce titre plus posé, plus cool (je suis le seul à y avoir trouvé des airs du "Killing In The Name" ?) fait bien meilleure impression et globalement, dévoile une formation honnête qui s'épanouit dans la simplicité basique d'un riff juste ("Lifting" par exemple), de paroles tranchantes et d'un Heavy Metal inoffensif mais sympathique. Une combinaison plutôt gagnante en dépit d'imperfections inhérentes au premier effort d'un groupe qui, semble-t-il, est un peu resté bloqué dans les années 80. C'est-à-dire que si Connexion Animale était sorti juste derrière Marche Ou Crève, on aurait peut-être dit de lui qu'il était visionnaire... Vingt ans après, les dentiers claquent, arborent un sourire de mort, lovés dans leur verre d'eau. Le coup de mâchoire surprise s'est muté en un miaulement de vieux matou pantouflard mais attachant. Et si cet album renifle la naphtaline à plein nez, on n'oubliera pas non plus, dans un élan de bonne foi, de souligner sa conviction, son engouement et sa passion dégoulinante pour le Rock, comme en atteste l'explicite "Enfant Du Rock".

Il y a éventuellement une part d'autobiographie dans cette chanson, et si c'est le cas, SALHEM peut se relever fièrement. Tout en ne cachant pas le côté has-been de ce disque vieillot, je me dois de vous faire part de l'obstination de ces français. Une obstination lucide mais finalement assez payante au moment de faire le bilan de Connexion Animale. SALHEM aura laissé son empreinte sur le monde du Rock et aussi petite soit-elle, c'est la plus belle des récompenses quand on a cette passion communicative.
