Chaque sortie d'ENTHRONED est un exercice d'analyse assez périlleux. Ce constat, disons qu'on le fait depuis une grosse quinzaine d'années, quand sont sortis le très bon The Apocalyspe Manifesto ou le non-moins excellent Towards The Skullthrone Of Satan et ses créations enflammées comme "Evil Church". J'ai eu la malchance d'entamer un processus d'écriture envers ces Belges avec Pentagrammaton (2010) et de l'aveu même de l'emblématique Nornagest, qui s'est confessé en ces pages, cet album n'était "pas seulement un nouvel album d'ENTHRONED, il est le premier d'une longue série". Une renaissance, un nouveau départ, une résurrection (bien que ce terme biblique semble inapproprié dans ce cas de figure), appelez ça comme vous voulez, il n'empêche que cette institution de choix pour le Black Metal a laissé un message très clair à ses détracteurs, qui ne se retrouvent en ENTHRONED qu'au travers de son passé glorieux. Comme une négation du présent auquel répond un majeur fièrement tendu.
Depuis donc quatre années et Pentagrammaton, le groupe, emmené par l'inénarrable Nornagest, fait de ses albums un moment d'introspection sur lequel personne n'a droit de regard. De la production au layout, du mixage à l'artwork, le moindre paramètre technique est soumis à l'œil expert de ces messieurs, ce qui fera peut-être de Sovereigns le full-lenght le plus personnel du groupe sur les dix qui composent désormais leur discographie. Il y a quelque chose d'éminemment intense sur ce disque. D'emblée, une profondeur spirituelle un peu nouvelle prend à la gorge. Des odeurs d'encens, de bois brûlé, d'ammoniaque flottent dans l'air, comme autant de particules de haine en suspension. Ce n'est pas le mérite d'"Anteloquium", une introduction assez classique, ni même de "Sine Qua Non", qui distille un Black Metal brutal et strident. Les deux premiers morceaux sont d'ailleurs assez chaotiques, pour ne pas dire inégaux. En dépit de ses parutions régulières, on a du mal à retrouver une intimité immédiate avec ENTHRONED. Comme si un membre de ta propre famille se comporte avec toi tel un inconnu. Puis l'étincelle. Après la folie meurtrière d'"Of Feathers And Flames", l'arrivée de "Lamp Of Invisible Lights" a quelque chose de salvateur. Je ne sais pas si c'est le côté mid-tempo, la voix de Nornagest, les samples vaporeux ou la ressemblance avec le "In The Halls Of White Death" de MERRIMACK, mais je trouve ce titre absolument fascinant, un vrai coup de poignard dont la beauté subtile éclipse la violence. Et en parlant de violence, ENTHRONED ne se fait pas prier. Si "Of Shrines And Sovereigns" est un alliage réussi de MARDUK cogneur et de MARDUK insidieux (avec ces chœurs grégoriens qui rappellent forcément leur "Accuser / Opposer"), une compo comme "Divine Coagulation" ne doit rien à personne. Le sang ne peut que coaguler face à la chaleur et à l'énergie déployées par les Belges ! Pire. Il se figera devant "Nerxiarxin Mahathallah", une conclusion épique complètement décousue, dont le bourdonnement incessant n'aura d'autre mérite que d'asséner le coup fatal.
Complet, parfois exagérément brutal mais surtout spirituellement abouti, Sovereigns est un album qui souffle le chaud et le froid en un instant. On a parfois l'impression, sur certains séquences, d'effectuer un bond dans le passé, mais le mysticisme qui englobe cette œuvre, l'âme tourmentée qui plane au-dessus de ces morceaux est une présence profane qu'ignorer reviendrait à désacraliser. Nornagest et ses compagnons d'infortune ont fait de ce dixième opus le chapitre d'un livre auquel on s'identifiera sur l'instant, comme si son auteur avait sondé notre âme pour s'inspirer de nos souffrances. Sauf qu'ENTHRONED est bien la dernière entité à laquelle je voudrais confier mes peurs.
