Vous n'en soupçonnez peut-être rien, mais derrière NAER MATARON se cache probablement le plus ancien et le plus malfaisant groupe de Black Metal athénien. Une légende. Sa force, au-delà d'une puissance musicale incontestable, réside en sa persévérance. J'évoquais récemment le cas particulier d'ENSHADOWED et son influence sur les autres formations du cru, mais force est de constater que sans NAER MATARON et sa flopée de démos révolutionnaires parues entre 1994 et 1999 sous le nom NAR MATARON, l'aura de N.E.C.R.O et des siens ne serait surement pas aussi autoritaire aujourd'hui. Il y a ceux qui posent les fondations et ceux qui construisent dessus. Avec le recul, on peut légitimement considérer River At Dash Scalding comme la pierre angulaire de leur discographie, scellant à jamais l'identité d'un Black Metal déjà développé via Up From The Ashes (1998) et Skotos Aenaon (2000).
Le coup de grâce. Car quoiqu'en dise mon estimé et connaisseur collègue Warloghe, Discipline Manifesto (qui lui succèdera en 2005) sera un cran en-dessous. Equilibre presque parfait entre haine, spiritualité et brutalité, ce troisième opus offre tout ce qu'on attend d'un album de Black Metal extrême, sans trop s'enfoncer dans des délires historico-épiques, ni dans un minimalisme de fortune. Glorifiant dans ses paroles et son concept l'ancienne Europe, NAER MATARON ouvre la brèche grâce à une intro efficace sur laquelle se manifestent des tambours, comme une préparation à la guerre à venir. Pas très original mais ô combien précieux, puisque les réels débuts du disque légitiment ce choix. Sous un déluge de riffs apocalyptiques, de vociférations suppliantes, de blasts frénétiques justifiants la pub que le groupe a fait à son nouveau batteur, Warhead, les Grecs proposent une majestueuse interprétation de Brutal Black Metal "à la scandinave". On se retrouve aspirés dans l'œil d'un cyclone qui tourbillonne sans jamais trouver le temps de s'arrêter, la faute à une section rythmique fracassante. Branché sur du MARDUK pour l'ultra-violence et du DARK FUNERAL pour le son compressé, NAER MATARON ne se permet aucun écart de conduite, si l'on excepte quelques lignes mélodiques éparses, comme sur la fin en roue libre de "Revolt Against The Modern World" qui fait penser à une version indisciplinée des premiers SATYRICON. Le problème, c'est justement que ce trio évoque, évoque encore, évoque toujours sans vraiment jouer sur un autre filon que sa férocité. C'est imposant, oui, et on comprend soudain pourquoi eux plus que d'autres ont réussi à se faire un nom dans leur pays, mais ma foi, cet extrémisme musical là n'a de sens que s'il est doublé d'une personnalité forte. Au travers de l'interlude "Ancestor-Worship" ou de "The Plunderer", on perçoit l'ombre de variations, vocales et rythmiques, mais ce n'est pas fait avec le même naturel barbare qu'un "The Triumph Of Will".
Fine gâchette dans l'univers du Black Metal européen, principalement connu pour le jusqu'au-boutisme d'albums comme celui-là, NAER MATARON est entré en 2012 dans une nouvelle ère. Une ère différente, lardée d'expérimentations et de progressisme, qui pourra faire regretter le temps béni de River At Dash Scalding, quand le trio enfonçait définitivement le clou dans le poignet du crucifié. Et Dieu sait lui-même que pour un groupe de Black Metal aussi vindicatif, c'est un très bel honneur.
