N’avez-vous jamais ressenti cette fâcheuse sensation de perte de temps, même infime soit-elle, en écoutant un disque ? Car tel est le cas avec le premier opus des extrémistes « Mathcore » plus connus sous le nom de Psyopus. Faisons d’abord une présentation succincte pour vous situer un peu le niveau du groupe, avec notamment un fait divers relatif au guitariste, Christopher Arp, reconnu comme ayant remporté le concours régional de Guitar Center pour Limp Bizkit en 2001 à Rochester, suite au départ de Wes Borland du groupe de Néo !! Dommage, il aurait pu être le gratteux de Limp Bizkit ! En concurrence avec Dino Cazares (ex Fear-Factory) ? Pour la petite anecdote, celui-ci a gentiment décliné l’offre, la considérant (à juste titre) comme un suicide artistique !!
Je fais un peu du hors sujet là… Bon, Psyopus a la particularité d’affectionner les tempos syncopés, les guitares dissonantes avec une grande influence jazzy qui se ressent au travers de ces compositions. Sur le papier, bon, pourquoi pas mais, sur une platine, par contre, ça ne le fait pas ! Car si le talent, la technicité des musiciens n’est pas à remettre en cause, il n’en va pas de même sur l’aspect créatif, ce qui débouche sur des morceaux complètement déjantés, frôlant parfois la bouillie sonore et le tohu-bohu !
On sent de grandes influences Jazzy dans les structures et la construction de leurs titres, il va de soi que les improvisations sont dès lors de rigueur. Mais là où les morceaux auraient pu avoir un semblant d’intérêt et de cohérence, Psyopus prend le parti pris de la surenchère amenant inéluctablement les neuf plages dans un gouffre musical chargé d’irritation et de supplice auditif !
Ma tolérance en matière d’expérimentation a atteint avec Psyopus ses limites.
Pour tous les fans de groupes tels que The Dillinger Escape Plan ou de Lethargy, procurez-vous ce disque !
Maintenant, petit message de prévention : ne pas écouter cet album si vous êtes victime d’un coma éthylique ! Ce serait fatal et les peaux de renard retapisseraient votre papier peint vintage années 70 !
