Hallelujah ! Après 15 ans d’absence en studio et dans un contexte musical saturé par le Black Metal, que pouvions nous vraiment espérer du retour de nos Chrétiens ? Car même si le groupe revenait au meilleur de sa forme, il faut bien admettre que la mode est passée. Eh bien, sans se dégonfler, le quator fait son retour quand même, et le résultat est carrément concluant.
Ça commençait pourtant mal avec ce “Open Your Eyes” banal et plat, davantage destiné à figurer comme bonus sur un quelconque pressage Japonais. Mais les paladins du Metal se font pardonner en attaquant aussitôt après, avec leur single “Reborn” : une rythmique et un chant hachés qui laissent place à un refrain hallucinant dans lequel Michael Sweet prouve, une fois encore, qu’il est tout simplement l’un des meilleurs chanteurs de ses 20 dernières années !
Le groupe a eu la sagesse d’éviter les pièges classiques dans lesquels tombent facilement les groupes faisant un come-back après de nombreuses années d’absence : ni un retour aux sources, ni une tentative de pomper le Metal actuel. En fait, STRYPER livre un nouvel album comme s’il n’y avait jamais eu de split, comme si le groupe avait sorti un disque par an depuis 1990. On reconnaît donc le style du groupe, mais il y a eu une évolution incontestable. La carrière solo que Michael Sweet n’a jamais cessé de poursuivre n’est pas étrangère à cette avancée, même si Reborn est davantage orienté Metal.
On retrouve un Hard Rock commercial très dense en chœurs et refrains-qui-tuent : “If I Die”, “Make You Mine” et surtout “When Did I See You Cry” aux guitares mordantes.
“Rain” est une pseudo-ballade, pas mauvaise mais franchement mollassonne ; davantage dans le registre de Michael Sweet que de STRYPER. Parmi les titres plus nerveux, on trouve “10.000 Yeras” et “Live Again”.
L’album s’achève avec une reprise dispensable de “In God We Trust”, l’un des rares bons morceaux de l’album du même nom. On aurait préféré un inédit de plus.
Il faut signaler le travail de Robert Sweet à la batterie : toujours subtil, jamais ostentatoire, il fait pourtant des merveilles derrières ses fûts.
Enfin, il faut parler des paroles ! Ah, les paroles de STRYPER ! Alors que le groupe avait décidé de mettre ses convictions religieuses entre parenthèses lors de la sortie de Against The Law, revoici les prières à Jésus, les incitations à lire l’Evangile, etc.
Bref, STRYPER est de retour !
