Cela fait quelques temps que l’on reproche à TEN de ne pas évoluer et de nous resservir un peu toujours les mêmes compos. Eh bien, Gary Hughes a entendu la critique et il a décidé d’agir ! Hélas son inspiration n’a pas suivi. Il a alors décidé de tout étirer en longueur ! Cette fois non seulement on se tape toujours les mêmes chansons, mais en plus elles durent entre 6’30 et 12’ !
Tout débute avec une intro grandiloquente, du genre qui devient vite saoulante après plusieurs écoutes ; mais la petite originalité, c’est de l’avoir collée à la chanson elle-même au lieu de l’avoir mise sur une piste séparée.
Avec « Hallowed Ground » TEN nous offre un titre sympathique qui pourrait figurer parmi les meilleurs morceau du groupe. Mais, là encore, quelle idée de le faire redémarrer alors qu’il se terminait. Du coup il dépasse les 10 minutes alors qu’il n’a clairement pas les moyens de tenir une telle longueur. On a l’impression de l’écouter 2 fois de suite.
C’est moins frappant mais tout aussi vrai sur la plupart des autres morceaux. Ainsi l’excellent « Oblivion » a toutes les qualités pour être un joyau de Hard Rock mélodique : belle mélodie, refrain accrocheur et des parties de guitares orientée 80’s, très typiques. Mais pourquoi diable la faire durer plus de 7 minutes ?
Et l’on ne cesse de pester que Gary Hughes n’ait pas davantage utilisé ses ciseaux pour couper tout le superflu. Car – et c’est là que l’on enrage – les compositions sont vraiment très bonnes. Avec The Twilight Chronicles nous avons le sentiment d’être passé à côté d’un bon album.
